First: are you writing an engineer resume or a technician resume?

In the US these are two different jobs and two different resumes. An HVAC engineer designs systems: load calculations, equipment selection, duct and pipe layouts, drawings, specifications and submittal review, usually with a degree in mechanical engineering. An HVAC technician installs, services and troubleshoots equipment in the field, usually with a trade school certificate and EPA Section 608 certification.

Add a short project list if your work is varied. Four lines is enough: building type, square footage, tonnage or system type, your role. It answers the question every design manager asks, which is whether you have done their building type before.

What an HVAC design manager reads first

  • Building types. Healthcare, labs and data centers are their own worlds. A resume full of warehouse work does not get shortlisted for a hospital job, and the reverse is also true.
  • Scale. Square footage and tonnage. "Designed HVAC for commercial buildings" tells them nothing; "8,000 to 340,000 sq ft, plants up to 900 tons" tells them everything.
  • Licensure status: FE passed, EIT, PE, and in which states. This decides whether you can stamp work, which decides which projects you can be put on.
  • Software, listed by product name. Trace 3D Plus and HAP are the two load and energy tools most US firms use, and Revit MEP is the documentation standard. Saying "proficient in design software" reads as a gap.
