Mechanical engineering resumes are read by engineering managers first and recruiters second. Managers skip the adjectives and look for four things, usually in this order.

  • What you designed or analyzed, and for what product. "Designed components" means nothing. "Designed the infeed and guarding for a 40-case-a-minute case packer" tells them your scale, industry and level of ownership.
  • Tools. The CAD package (SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo, NX, CATIA), analysis tools (ANSYS, Abaqus, SolidWorks Simulation, MATLAB), and PLM or ERP (Windchill, Teamcenter, SAP). Managers hire for their toolchain because retraining takes months.
  • Numbers. Cost, weight, part count, cycle time, test results, failure rates, tolerances held, schedule. One per bullet. Engineers who cannot quantify their own work worry managers.
  • Credentials and standards. ABET-accredited degree, FE or P.E., CSWP or similar, and the standards you work to (ASME Y14.5, ISO 12100, ASME BPVC, UL, AHRI). A P.E. matters in consulting and anything stamped; in product design it is a plus, not a filter.

Mechanical engineering has one license and a handful of certifications that managers recognize. List each with the issuer and year. Never inflate: "FE exam passed" and "P.E." are different lines on the page and different things in the interview.

  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, administered by NCEES. Passing it makes you an Engineer in Training (EIT) or Engineer Intern (EI), depending on the state. List it as "FE exam, Mechanical, NCEES, 2026" or "EIT certification, [state], 2026".
