Social Worker Resume Examples & Writing Guide

This is a resume for a master's-level social worker who moved from child welfare casework into hospital social work. The name is made up. Read the top third first: credentials after the name, license and state, setting and population, caseload. That is the order a program director or hospital recruiter reads in, because the license decides which jobs you can legally hold.

Whoever reads your resume is checking whether they can legally and safely put you on a caseload. That means license, setting and population before anything else. Four things decide whether you get a call.

• License level and state. Titles differ by state: Texas uses LBSW, LMSW and LCSW; Ohio uses LSW and LISW; Minnesota uses LSW, LGSW, LICSW; California uses ASW (associate) and LCSW. Some agency jobs need only a BSW or MSW, and clinical jobs require the clinical license. Write your exact license, board and status.
• Setting and population. Child welfare, hospital, hospice, school, behavioral health, VA, corrections, older adults, IDD, homelessness. A director hiring for an oncology unit reads "med-surg and oncology, 18 to 24 patients" and knows you can start.
• Caseload and documentation. Caseload size, contact requirements you met, timeliness of assessments and notes, and the systems (Epic, Cerner, a state child welfare system, a county HMIS). These prove you can carry the work.
• Field placements and supervision. For new graduates, the practicum sites and hours stand in for jobs. For everyone, supervision toward a clinical license shows where you are headed.

“I look for the license line and the caseload number first. Then the setting. A social worker who tells me they carried twenty-five kids and kept visits at a hundred percent has told me more than three paragraphs about compassion would.”

Social work licensing is set by each state board, and the ASWB exams (Bachelors, Masters, Clinical) are the shared step. Give the license its own section or the top of a "Licenses and Certifications" section: license name, state board, status and renewal date. Recruiters verify online, so the number is optional. If you are between exam and license, say exactly where you are.

How to write your degree and placements:

• Degree: "Master of Social Work (MSW), Clinical Concentration, Gulf Coast State University, 2019." Add "CSWE-accredited" once, because licensing boards require it and recruiters check. Spell out the degree the first time; "MSW" alone is fine after your name.
• Advanced standing: write "MSW (Advanced Standing), 2026" so the one-year timeline does not look like a gap.
• Field placements: list each under Experience (not Education) with the agency type, population, hours and 2 to 3 bullets on what you did. CSWE requires at least 400 hours for a BSW and 900 for an MSW, so you have real hours to show.
• Licensure supervision: a line under the license with hours completed and the supervisor's credential ("under LCSW-S supervision" in Texas), never the supervisor's name.
• Certifications that fit the setting: trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, CPR/BLS (hospitals), Mental Health First Aid, Certified Case Manager (CCM), Certified Advanced Social Work Case Manager (C-ASWCM) from NASW, school social work certification where your state issues one, and substance use credentials (CADC or your state's equivalent). List only what you hold, with the issuer and year.

Write a summary once you hold a license or have a full-time social work job. Write an objective as a new graduate or when changing populations, and keep it about what you bring: license status, placements, populations, languages. Line one always names the license and the setting.

Most social work resumes describe duties in the language of the job posting: "provided case management services to clients." Directors know the duties. They want caseload, population, requirements met, systems used and outcomes, stated without breaking client confidentiality.

Keep the skills section to 12 to 15 items that a supervisor could verify in an interview or on the job. Empathy is assumed; "safety planning" and "Epic" are searchable.

• Assessment and intervention: biopsychosocial assessment, risk and safety assessment (suicide, DV, child safety), crisis intervention, safety planning, motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care, solution-focused and CBT techniques, grief and end-of-life support.
• Case management: care coordination, discharge planning, benefits navigation (Medicaid, Medicare, SSI/SSDI, SNAP, housing vouchers), referrals and warm handoffs, advocacy with landlords, schools and courts.
• Legal and compliance: mandated reporting, HIPAA and confidentiality, court reports and testimony, guardianship and advance directives, documentation to agency and payer standards.
• Systems: Epic, Cerner, Meditech (hospitals); your state's child welfare information system; HMIS (homelessness); Credible, Netsmart or Therapy Notes (behavioral health); Microsoft Office and Teams.
• Population-specific: DSM-5-TR diagnosis (clinical roles), IEP and 504 process (schools), dementia care and long-term care placement (older adults), reentry planning (corrections), IDD waiver services.
• Leadership and teaching: field instruction, interdisciplinary rounds, group facilitation, program development, quality improvement projects.

A new social work graduate has never had "no experience". You have 400 to 1,000 supervised field hours, often a paid job in human services, and the ASWB exam ahead of you. Directors hire new graduates every summer; they want to see your placements described like jobs and your license timeline stated plainly.

1. 1Header with degree after your name ("Devon Price, MSW"), then the license line: exam date and application status, or the license if you already hold it.
2. 2Objective, two lines: degree and date, field hours and settings, populations, languages, and the kind of role you want.
3. 3Field Experience section above any non-social-work jobs. Each placement gets agency type, population, hours, dates and 2 to 3 bullets on what you did (assessments, groups, home visits, referrals), not what you observed.
4. 4Related work: residential counselor, case aide, behavioral technician, crisis line volunteer, camp counselor, CNA. Give caseloads and shifts.
5. 5Education with concentration, honors and one line of relevant coursework if space allows. Certifications: CPR, Mental Health First Aid, trauma-informed care modules, QPR or ASIST suicide prevention training. One page.

Hospitals, counties and large nonprofits all use applicant tracking systems (Workday, NEOGOV for government jobs, iCIMS, Taleo). County and state jobs often also require a separate application form that asks for the same information; fill it completely, because HR screens on it before the director sees your resume.

• Length: one page for new graduates and BSW-level roles; two pages for licensed social workers with 5+ years, clinical caseloads, supervision or program roles. Never three.
• Order: header with credentials, license, summary, experience (field placements count), education, skills, certifications.
• One column, standard font, no photo, no date of birth. "Resume" in the US; in the UK the document is a CV and the registration is with Social Work England or the equivalent body in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.
• Keywords to mirror from the posting: the exact license abbreviation, "case management", "psychosocial assessment", "discharge planning", "crisis intervention", "trauma-informed", "treatment planning", "documentation", the population words ("child welfare", "older adults", "SMI"), the EHR named, and "bilingual" if it is listed.
• Write both forms once: "Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)", "Master of Social Work (MSW)", so the system and the reader both match.
• Save as PDF unless the portal asks for Word: Alicia-Moreno-LMSW-Resume.pdf.
