School Principal Resume Examples & Writing Guide

A principal resume gets a first-round interview when the superintendent sees the size and type of school you led, a current state administrator license, and three or four results with numbers next to them: achievement, attendance, discipline and teacher retention. Leadership philosophy belongs in the cover letter, not the resume.

School principal resume example (comprehensive high school)

This is a two-page resume for a sitting high school principal applying for a larger building or a district role. The name and schools are made up. Notice that every job line starts with the size of the school, because a superintendent's first question is always "how big and what kind".

Put enrollment, staff count and school type in the job title line itself, like "Principal (1,240 students, 86 staff, Title I)". A superintendent comparing eight applicants wants to know in one second whether you have led at their scale.

What a superintendent and a hiring panel check first

Principal searches usually run through a paper screen by the superintendent or an HR director, then a panel that can include board members, teachers and parents. Four things decide whether you reach the panel.

  • Scale and school type. Elementary, middle, high, K-8, alternative, charter, magnet. Enrollment, staff size, percentage of students in poverty, percentage of multilingual learners and special education. A 300-student elementary principal and a 2,000-student high school principal are different jobs.
  • A current administrator license in that state, or a clear path to one. Every state licenses principals separately from teachers, and out-of-state applicants get screened out fast if they do not address reciprocity.
  • Results with numbers. Graduation, proficiency growth, attendance, discipline, teacher retention. Two or three real movements beat a page of responsibilities.
  • How you treat adults. Districts lose principals over staff turnover and community trust, not over test scores. Teacher retention, hiring, mentoring and family engagement all belong on the page.

Every principal applicant tells me they are a servant leader with a passion for kids. Nobody applies saying the opposite. What I actually read is the enrollment, the free and reduced lunch percentage, and whether the numbers moved while you were in the building. Save the philosophy for the cover letter.

Licensure, degrees and how to list them

Principal licensure is a state matter, and the name changes at the state line: Principal License in Colorado, School Building Leader in New York, Administrative Services Credential in California, Principal Certificate in Texas. Use the exact name your state uses, and add the expiry year. Check your state's education department for what a specific state requires.

  • The usual path is a teaching license and several years of classroom teaching, then a master's degree or certificate program in educational leadership or administration, an internship, and a state exam.
  • The School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA) from ETS is used by a number of states; others use their own exam, such as the Texas principal certification exam. Name the one you actually took.
  • Put licensure above education if you already hold it, because a screener looks for it first.
  • A doctorate (Ed.D. or Ph.D.) is not required to be a principal in most places, but it does matter for district-level jobs and for larger high schools. If you have one, put the letters after your name.
  • Applying out of state? Add a line like "Colorado Principal License; Arizona reciprocity application submitted August 2026". Silence on this question is what gets a strong resume rejected.
  • The Professional Standards for Educational Leaders (PSEL) are the common national frame for principal practice. It is fine to reference them once when describing your evaluation or improvement work, but do not build the whole resume around the ten standards.
Never list a license or exam you have not completed. Districts verify licensure through the state system before an offer, and in some states a false claim on an application is reportable to the licensing board.

Build my school principal resume

Leadership bullets: responsibilities against results

The most common problem on principal resumes is a list of things every principal does. Everyone supervises staff, manages budgets and communicates with parents. Write what changed on your watch and by how much.

Weak (responsibility)Strong (scale, action, result)
Responsible for the overall operation of the school.Lead a 1,240-student Title I high school with 86 staff and a $1.4 million site budget, including scheduling, hiring, evaluation and school improvement planning.
Worked to improve student achievement.Raised four-year graduation from 79% to 91% over five years with a ninth-grade success team, weekly credit checks and a summer recovery program serving 180 students.
Addressed student attendance issues.Cut chronic absenteeism from 31% to 18% in four years by adding a family liaison, daily attendance calls and a Saturday recovery option used by 240 students a year.
Handled student discipline.Replaced most out-of-school suspensions with restorative conferences; suspensions fell 44% over three years and repeat referrals dropped from 38% to 21% of cases.
Supported and supervised teachers.Completed 240 instructional walkthroughs a year with written feedback inside 48 hours, and evaluated 62 teachers on the district rubric; teacher retention rose from 71% to 89%.
Managed the school budget.Reallocated $210,000 of Title I funds from pull-out tutoring to two interventionist positions and a literacy coach, which the school board approved for a second year on growth data.
Communicated with parents and the community.Started a monthly Spanish and English family academy attended by 60 to 90 families and raised parent survey response from 12% to 47% in two years.
Oversaw special education compliance.Chaired about 90 IEP meetings a year for 118 students and passed two state special education audits with no compliance findings.
Where do the numbers come from? Your state report card, the district data dashboard, your school improvement plan, the discipline report in PowerSchool or Infinite Campus, and HR's staff retention list. Pull them before you leave a building; they are hard to get afterwards.

School administrator skills to put on the resume

Group them so a screener can see the instructional side and the operational side at once. Both get asked about in the panel interview.

  • Instructional leadership: teacher coaching cycles, walkthroughs and feedback, curriculum alignment, common assessments, PLC facilitation, literacy and math intervention design, evaluation rubrics.
  • Data: state assessment and interim data, attendance and discipline analysis, early warning indicators, school improvement planning, accreditation and state accountability reporting.
  • Operations: master schedule building, staffing allocation, site budget and Title I funds, facilities and safety drills, transportation and food service coordination, state testing coordination.
  • People: hiring and interview panels, induction and mentoring, evaluation and improvement plans, union contract administration, difficult conversations and documentation.
  • Students and families: MTSS, PBIS, restorative practices, special education and 504 processes, multilingual learner programs, family engagement, crisis and threat assessment teams.
  • Systems: PowerSchool, Infinite Campus or Skyward, Frontline, Google Workspace for Education, survey platforms, state reporting portals.

Cut words like visionary, dynamic and passionate. A panel reads them as filler, and the space is better spent on the number of teachers you evaluated.

Moving up: assistant principal or teacher leader applying for principal

If you have never held the top job, your resume has to answer one question: have you already done principal work under a different title? Build the page around evidence that you have.

  1. 1Lead every assistant principal bullet with the system you owned, not the tasks you helped with: the master schedule, the discipline system, the testing calendar, the special education process.
  2. 2Show budget and hiring exposure even if it was partial: sat on interview panels, wrote the Title I plan, managed an activity account of a certain size.
  3. 3Name your leadership preparation: the licensure program, the internship hours, a district aspiring principal academy or a state leadership fellowship, with the year completed.
  4. 4Add a short "school improvement results" block near the top with three numbers you personally moved, so the panel does not have to hunt for them.
  5. 5Keep at least one line of classroom credibility: subject, grade levels and years taught. Teachers on the panel look for it.
  6. 6In the cover letter, not the resume, address the obvious question about why you are ready for the whole building.
Assistant principal bullet, systems ownership
Owned the 6-8 master schedule for 780 students and 62 sections, building common planning for all four grade-level teams and protecting a daily 30-minute intervention block.
Teacher leader bullet, instructional influence
Coached 14 teachers across two buildings in six-week literacy cycles with pre and post observation data; 11 of the 14 moved at least one level on the district rubric.
Leadership preparation entry
District Aspiring Principals Academy, Cherry Creek Valley School District, 2025: 180 hours of shadowing, a school improvement project and a budget simulation, completed alongside full assistant principal duties.

Format, length, the packet and ATS keywords

Two pages is right for a principal. One page hides the scale of your buildings, three pages reads as padding. Most district applications go through an online system such as Frontline, AppliTrack or a state education job board, so keep the file plain: one column, standard headings, no photo, no headshot, no graphics.

  • Order: contact, summary, licensure, leadership experience, teaching experience, education, selected results or professional service. Licensure goes high.
  • Districts usually ask for a full packet: application form, resume, cover letter, transcripts, three to five references with titles and phone numbers, and sometimes a leadership portfolio or a written response. Do not put the references on the resume itself; keep a separate sheet.
  • Mirror the posting's own words: instructional leadership, school improvement plan, MTSS, PBIS, professional learning communities, teacher evaluation, Title I, multilingual learners, master schedule, family engagement, data-driven decision making, ESSA accountability.
  • Spell out the school type and level in each entry so an automated search matches: "comprehensive 9-12 high school", "K-5 elementary", "Title I middle school".
  • US conventions: no photo, no date of birth, no marital status, no personal details. If you are applying to an international school abroad, they may ask for a CV with a photo instead, so read that posting carefully.
  • File name: anthony-cardoza-principal-resume.pdf.

The equivalent role in the UK, Ireland and much of the Commonwealth is head teacher or headmaster, and applications there use a CV plus a long supporting statement. If you are applying in the US, keep the resume format on this page.

Frequently asked questions

What should a school principal put on a resume?

Enrollment, staff size and school type for every leadership role, your state administrator license, and three or four results with numbers: graduation or proficiency, attendance, discipline, teacher retention. Then your degrees, your teaching background and a grouped skills list. Two pages.

How do I write a principal resume that stands out?

Replace responsibilities with movement. "Responsible for student achievement" says nothing; "raised four-year graduation from 79% to 91% in five years with a ninth-grade success team" says everything. Pick the three numbers you actually moved and put them in the summary as well as the bullets.

What skills should a school administrator list on a resume?

Instructional leadership and teacher coaching, teacher evaluation, master schedule building, site budget and Title I funds, data analysis, MTSS and PBIS, special education and 504 compliance, hiring and mentoring, family engagement, crisis planning, and the student information system you use, such as PowerSchool or Infinite Campus.

Do I need a master's degree to apply for a principal job?

In nearly all US public districts, yes: a master's degree plus a state administrator license, and usually several years of teaching first. Requirements vary by state, so check your state education department. A doctorate is not required for most principalships but helps for large high schools and district roles.

How long should a principal resume be?

Two pages. Superintendents expect it and one page cannot hold enrollment, budget, results and licensure for three or four roles. Put the most recent building and its numbers on page one; move earlier teaching, professional service and presentations to page two.

How do I move from assistant principal to principal on paper?

Show that you already owned whole systems, not tasks: the master schedule, the discipline system, testing, special education compliance, hiring panels. Add your licensure program, internship hours and any aspiring principal academy with the year. Keep one line about your classroom teaching for credibility with the panel.

Should a principal send a resume or a CV?

For US K-12 districts, send a resume of two pages with a cover letter, and a separate reference sheet. A CV with publications and presentations is expected for university or research posts, and head teacher applications in the UK and Ireland use a CV plus a supporting statement. Read the posting.
