Construction Foreman Resume Examples & Writing Guide

This sample is a concrete and general trades foreman with about 14 years in the field, promoted from carpenter to lead to foreman on commercial and light industrial work. The name and companies are invented. Keep the shape and put in your own crew sizes, project values and safety record.

Foreman hiring is usually done by a superintendent or a project manager who has a crew waiting. They are scanning for four things.

• Crew size and trade. Ten framers is a different job than twenty-five laborers on a highway job. Say the number and the trades you led.
• Project type and value. Commercial, residential, industrial, heavy civil, tenant improvement. Add the dollar value and the square footage, because those set the pace and the paperwork.
• Safety record. "Zero lost-time injuries in 5 years" or "no OSHA recordables on 4 consecutive projects". This is often the first line read. If you have had an incident, do not invent a clean record; the reference check will find it.
• Schedule and paperwork. Did the work finish on time, and can you actually file a daily report? A foreman who does not do daily reports creates work for the super, and supers know it.

“Give me crew size, project value and your safety number in the first three lines. If a guy tells me he ran twenty men on a twenty-million-dollar job with no lost-time injuries and got his dailies in every night, I will call him before I read the rest of the page.”

Three or four lines. Years in the trade, years leading, crew size, project type and value, safety record, one certification. Objectives are rare at this level; write a summary unless you are stepping up from journeyman.

Almost every foreman resume online says "supervised construction crew and ensured work was completed safely and on time". That sentence fits any foreman on earth and tells a superintendent nothing. Here is the same claim written five ways that actually say something.

A foreman is half tradesman, half front-line manager, and the skills list should show both halves. Keep it to about 12 lines in three groups.

Field and trade:

• Your trade at journeyman level (carpentry, concrete, electrical, mechanical, masonry)
• Blueprint, shop drawing and spec reading
• Layout: total station, rotary laser, transit, string line
• Formwork, rebar placement, concrete finishing, or your trade's equivalent
• Rigging and signaling for crane picks
• Equipment: skid steer, telehandler, scissor and boom lift

Running the job:

• Three-week look-ahead scheduling and daily task planning
• Manpower planning and crew assignment
• Job hazard analysis, toolbox talks, incident reporting
• Subcontractor coordination and sequencing
• Quantity takeoff, material ordering and delivery staging
• Quality control, inspections and punch list closeout

Software and paperwork (name what you actually use):

• Procore or Autodesk Build for daily reports, RFIs and photo logs
• Bluebeam Revu for drawing markups and measurement
• Microsoft Project or Primavera P6, at least to read a schedule
• Digital timecards and payroll coding
• Bilingual crew communication (say the language and your level)

Put these in their own block. Never list one you do not hold; on commercial jobs cards get checked at the gate.

• OSHA 30-Hour Construction. The standard card for a supervisor. OSHA 10 is for workers; if you only have the 10, say so and get the 30.
• Competent person training. OSHA requires a designated competent person for excavation and trenching, fall protection, scaffolding and confined space. Name the ones you hold, because postings ask for them by name.
• First aid, CPR and AED from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
• NCCER credentials in your craft, if you have them, with the level. NCCER is the standard portable credential in a lot of the US commercial market.
• Aerial and scissor lift (MEWP) and forklift or telehandler operator training under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178.
• MSHA Part 46 if you work quarries, sand and gravel or aggregate sites.
• EM 385-1-1 40-hour training if you want federal work with the Army Corps of Engineers.
• Trade license if your state or city requires one, for example an electrical or plumbing license. Requirements vary state by state and sometimes by county, so check yours rather than assuming.

• Two pages is normal for a foreman with 10+ years. One page if you are stepping up from journeyman. Do not go to three.
• Consider a short project list instead of listing every job separately: name, type, value, your crew size, your role, one outcome. It keeps a long career readable.
• No photo, no date of birth. Reverse chronological with month and year dates.
• PDF, single column, plain headings. General contractors screen through Procore recruiting, Workday or Bamboo, and a two-column layout can lose your certification block.
• Mirror the posting's words: foreman, crew, superintendent, subcontractor, look-ahead schedule, daily report, JHA, toolbox talk, punch list, RFI, submittal, OSHA 30, competent person, Procore.
• If the posting says "site supervisor" or "working foreman", put that phrase in your summary line so the screener sees the match.

In the UK and Ireland the same role is usually called a site foreman or gaffer, on a CV rather than a resume, with CSCS and SMSTS cards instead of OSHA 30. If you are applying in the US, keep the US format (no photo, no personal details) and translate your cards once: "SMSTS (UK site management safety training), equivalent scope to OSHA 30". Then get the OSHA 30, because it is what US contractors actually ask for.
