What cloud hiring managers check first
Architect is a design job, not an operations job, and the resume has to prove you have made decisions other people had to live with. Four things get checked before anyone reads your bullets closely.
- Which cloud, and how deep. AWS, Azure and Google Cloud shops hire for their own platform. Name the primary one in your title line and be honest about the others. "Azure (production, four years)" and "Google Cloud (proof of concept only)" are both useful; "multi-cloud" on its own says nothing.
- Scale. Number of accounts or subscriptions, number of workloads or services, users served, monthly spend, region count. Spend is the fastest scale signal in this field, so include it if you can.
- Which decisions you owned. Landing zone and account structure, network topology, identity model, data residency, disaster recovery tier, container platform, cost model. Say which of those you designed rather than inherited.
- Whether you write things down. Architects are paid to produce design documents, diagrams and standards that engineers can build from. Mention design docs, architecture review boards, Well-Architected reviews or reference architectures.
“I can tell within two bullets whether someone architected or just operated. An operator writes "managed 200 EC2 instances". An architect writes "chose ECS over EKS for this workload because the team was four people and we could not staff cluster upgrades, here is what it cost". Give me the tradeoff, not the inventory.”

A flat list of 40 service names is unreadable and looks padded. Group by function so a reader can find what the posting asked for in one pass, and put the group that matches the job first.

Which cloud certifications actually help
Cloud is one of the few technology fields where certifications still open doors, partly because partner status requires vendors to employ certified staff. That said, only a few carry weight for an architect role.
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Professional level: the strongest single credential on the AWS side. The Associate version is a starting point, not an architect credential.
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305): the Azure equivalent, and often listed as required by Microsoft partners.
- Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect: expected in Google Cloud shops, less recognized elsewhere.
- AWS Certified Security Specialty or Microsoft SC-100: worth adding if the role touches regulated data.
- Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) and HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate: good proof of hands-on ability when your recent work has been design heavy.
- TOGAF 10: only relevant in large enterprises that run a formal enterprise architecture practice. Skip it for product companies.
List the exact certification name, the year, and nothing else. Certifications expire (AWS certifications are valid for three years), so write the year you earned or renewed it and keep it current. If one has lapsed, either renew it before applying or mark it clearly.

Cloud architect, solutions architect or cloud engineer: which title to use
These titles overlap and companies use them inconsistently, which is why so many people search for both. A quick guide to what employers usually mean, and what to write.
- Cloud architect: owns the platform design. Accounts, network, identity, guardrails, cost model, the standards other teams build inside.
- Solutions architect: owns the design of a specific solution or customer engagement. In vendor and partner companies this is often a pre-sales role with a quota attached, so say plainly whether yours was pre-sales or delivery.
- Enterprise architect: owns the technology direction across an organization, usually with less hands-on building and more governance.
- Cloud engineer or platform engineer: builds and runs what an architect designs. Deep in Terraform, pipelines and on-call.
- Site reliability engineer: focused on availability, error budgets and incident response rather than design.
Use the title you actually held, then mirror the posting's word once inside the summary. If your badge said "Senior Cloud Engineer" but you owned the reference architecture, write "Senior Cloud Engineer (architecture owner for the AWS platform)". Both search terms then match, and nothing is inflated.
No cloud architect title yet: system admins, developers and fresh graduates
Almost nobody starts as a cloud architect, and the searches for "cloud computing resume for freshers with no experience" show how many people are trying to get in. A first cloud role is realistic; a first architect role usually is not. Aim for cloud engineer, platform engineer or cloud support, and build the resume like this.
- 1Get one associate-level certification (AWS Solutions Architect Associate, AZ-104 or the Google Associate Cloud Engineer). It is the single fastest credibility signal for someone with no cloud job history.
- 2Build two projects you can draw on a whiteboard, not ten tutorials. A three-tier application deployed with Terraform across two availability zones, and a serverless pipeline that processes files into a database, are enough. Put the repository link on the resume.
- 3Write the projects like jobs: what you built, which services, what it cost to run per month, what broke and how you fixed it.
- 4Mine your current job for the parts that transfer. Windows and Linux administration, networking, backup and restore, ticketing, change control and scripting are all directly relevant, so describe them in cloud vocabulary where it is honest to do so.
- 5Look for the roles that hire from your background: managed service providers, cloud support engineer at a hyperscaler, or an internal platform team at your current employer.
Format, length and applicant tracking systems
Two pages once you have more than five years. One page only if you are early career. Keep the layout plain: single column, no graphics, no skill percentage bars, no photo.
- Put a short technical summary block near the top so a screener finds your stack without scrolling. Certifications go beside it or immediately below.
- Spell out both forms of anything that gets searched: "Kubernetes (EKS)", "infrastructure as code (Terraform)", "identity and access management (IAM)".
- Give each employer a one-line descriptor (sector, size), because "Northwind Logistics Technology" means nothing on its own.
- Mirror the posting's platform words exactly. A posting that says "Azure Landing Zone" and "Entra ID" should be answered with those spellings, not "Azure AD" alone.
- Send a PDF unless the application form asks for Word. Do not put your contact details in a header or footer, because some parsers drop them.
- Include a link to your GitHub or a public design write-up if you have one. For architects, a well-written blog post about a tradeoff you made is worth more than a repository of tutorials.
