Business Analyst Resume Examples & Writing Guide

This sample is for a business analyst with seven years of experience across logistics, banking and health insurance, now a senior BA on an agile delivery team. The person and employers are made up. Copy the structure, then replace the domain, artifacts, tools and numbers with yours.

Business analyst resumes are screened first by a recruiter matching keywords, then by a BA manager, product owner or IT director. The second reader is asking four questions.

• Which domain and which systems? Banking, insurance, healthcare, retail, supply chain, SaaS, public sector; and the platforms (core banking, claims, ERP such as SAP or Oracle, CRM such as Salesforce, data warehouse). Domain match often decides the shortlist.
• What did you produce? User stories, BRDs, use cases, process maps, data mappings, wireframes, test cases. Name the artifacts and how many. "Gathered requirements" without an artifact is unverifiable.
• Can you work with data? SQL is the dividing line for many BA roles. Show queries you wrote, data you reconciled, dashboards you built, and what you found.
• What changed because of your work? Cycle time, error rates, manual effort, adoption, revenue, compliance deadlines met, defects avoided. The BA rarely owns the result alone, so say "led the requirements for" and give the number honestly.

“I skip any resume that says 'liaison between business and IT' with nothing after it. Tell me the system, the artifacts you wrote, how many stakeholders you had in the room, and what the process looked like after. And if you can write SQL, put it in the first five lines.”

Use a summary once you have shipped at least one project as a BA. Use a career objective as a fresher, new graduate or career changer, and fill it with facts a recruiter can check: degree, certification, tools, an internship or a project.

The weakest BA resumes copy the job description: "gathered requirements, acted as liaison, created documentation, supported testing." Rewrite each one with the system, the artifact, the scale and the outcome.

Group the skills section in three or four short lines so a recruiter sees methods, tools and domain at once. List 12 to 16 items and only ones you can discuss in an interview.

Analysis methods:

• Requirements elicitation (interviews, workshops, observation, surveys) and prioritization (MoSCoW)
• User stories, acceptance criteria, use cases, BRDs and FRDs, functional and non-functional requirements
• Process modeling (BPMN 2.0, swimlanes, value stream maps), gap analysis, root-cause analysis
• Data modeling basics, data mapping, data dictionaries
• UAT planning, test cases, defect triage; traceability matrices; change control
• Agile (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe) and waterfall; backlog refinement; sprint ceremonies

Tools:

• SQL (name the database: SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, Snowflake, BigQuery), Excel with Power Query and pivot tables
• Power BI, Tableau or Looker for analysis and dashboards
• Jira, Confluence, Azure DevOps, Rally for requirements and backlog management
• Visio, Lucidchart, draw.io, Miro for process and system diagrams; Figma or Balsamiq for wireframes
• Enterprise systems you have worked on: Salesforce, SAP, Oracle, Workday, ServiceNow, Epic, Guidewire, core banking platforms

Domain and soft skills, stated specifically: the industry and regulations you know (HIPAA, Reg E, SOX, PCI DSS, CMS rules), facilitation of groups of a given size, writing for executives and developers, and negotiation of scope. Leave out "communication skills" and "team player" as bare phrases; the bullets should prove them.

No certification is required to work as a business analyst, and experience beats all of them. But recruiters use them as filters, and the IIBA levels tell a reader roughly how experienced you are. List each with the issuing body and year.

• CCBA requires about 3,750 hours of BA work and CBAP about 7,500 over the previous 10 years, so listing one signals your experience level. Do not list a level you have not earned; IIBA maintains a public registry.
• Education: a bachelor's degree in business, information systems, computer science, finance, economics or a related field, with the year. An MBA or MS in Information Systems or Analytics is common for senior roles but not expected.
• Bootcamps and certificate programs (a university BA certificate or a reputable online program) go under education or training with the provider and year. They help freshers and career changers; they add little once you have two years of experience.
• Vendor and tool certifications (Salesforce Business Analyst, SAP, ServiceNow, Tableau, Power BI) matter when the posting names the platform. List them next to the platform in your skills line as well.
• UK readers: the BCS International Diploma in Business Analysis is the common local credential, and the document is a CV. The rest of this page applies.

"Business analyst resume for freshers" and "with no experience" are among the most searched phrases for this job. Employers do hire junior BAs, but they hire evidence: a project where you wrote real requirements, a data skill you can demonstrate, and a domain you know from any job at all.

1. 1Title the resume "Business Analyst" or "Junior Business Analyst" and write a career objective with your degree, certification (ECBA if you have it), tools, and one project with numbers.
2. 2Create a Projects section above or instead of thin experience: academic capstones, internship deliverables, volunteer or freelance projects. For each: the problem, the stakeholders, the artifacts you produced (user stories, process maps, wireframes, a data model), and the outcome or grade.
3. 3Convert any job into analyst evidence. Customer service, operations, accounting, retail management and sales all involve processes, systems and data. Write about the process you improved, the report you built, the system change you tested, with numbers.
4. 4Prove the data skill: SQL (name the database), Excel with pivot tables and lookups, a Power BI or Tableau dashboard you published. A public portfolio link (GitHub or Tableau Public) works.
5. 5Show domain knowledge honestly: if you spent four years in a bank branch or a hospital billing office, that is domain expertise BA teams pay for. Put it in the objective.
6. 6One page, no photo, PDF. Recruiters for junior roles receive hundreds of applications and read the top third of the page.

• One page up to about 7 years; two pages for senior or lead BAs with several domains and programs. A recruiter spends under 30 seconds on the first pass.
• Order: header with target title and top certification, summary, skills section (grouped), experience with artifact-scale-result bullets, certifications, education. Freshers move projects and education up.
• Single column, standard fonts, real text, no photo, no skill-bar graphics. Large employers and staffing firms run BA resumes through applicant tracking systems that parse text, and "business analyst resume template" downloads with two columns often break in them.
• Name the domain and the systems in every job line, for example "Business Analyst, Claims Platform (Guidewire), Health Insurance." Recruiters filter on both.
• Match your LinkedIn headline and dates to the resume; recruiters check. Put the same three or four headline skills in both.
• In the UK and Ireland the document is a CV, two pages is standard, and the BCS Diploma replaces IIBA in many postings; the structure here still applies. Do not include a photo in the US, UK or Canada.
• PDF unless the application asks for Word. Name the file Firstname-Lastname-Business-Analyst.pdf.
