Architect Resume Examples & Writing Guide

A one-page resume for a project architect with eight years in practice, licensed since 2021. The name, firms and school are made up. Each project bullet names the building type, size and construction cost, the phases she led and a result a principal would care about: permit rounds, change orders, RFI turnaround, a certification achieved.

Architecture firms are mostly small; a principal or a studio director reads your resume, often the same day, next to your portfolio sample. Large firms add an HR recruiter and an applicant tracking system. Both look for the same four things.

• License status. Registered (which state, since when), or AXP hours complete and how many ARE divisions passed. It decides your title, your billing rate and whether you can stamp drawings.
• Project types, sizes and phases. A firm that does hospitals wants to see healthcare; a firm that does multifamily wants unit counts and podium construction. Say which phases you ran on each project, since "worked on" a $60M building could mean anything from renderings to CA.
• Software. Revit is the default in most US firms. They check for Revit proficiency, plus Rhino or SketchUp for design, Enscape or Lumion for visualization, Bluebeam for markups, and Adobe for presentation. Match the posting.
• The portfolio sample. Two or three pages attached to the resume with drawings, not just renderings: a wall section, a plan, a detail. It proves the resume.

“I read the license line, then the project list, then I open the portfolio. If someone says project architect on a $60M building, I want to see a wall section they drew and hear how many RFIs they answered. Renderings alone tell me very little.”

The path to licensure in the US runs through NCARB: an accredited degree (NAAB), the Architectural Experience Program (AXP, 3,740 hours across six practice areas), and the Architect Registration Examination (ARE 5.0, six divisions). Your state board issues the license; the NCARB Certificate makes it portable. Where you are on that path belongs near the top of the resume.

• Required for the title "Architect": a license from the state where you practice. Rules and reciprocity vary by state; California adds its own supplemental exam. Check your state board before listing anything.
• Expected: a NAAB-accredited B.Arch or M.Arch. List the degree and school; add studio awards, a thesis title or a study-abroad program only if you are early in your career.
• Strong plus: LEED AP (specialty such as BD+C) or LEED Green Associate from GBCI, WELL AP, Passive House (CPHC or CPHD), and Revit certification from Autodesk. Name the issuing body and year.
• AIA membership is not a credential, but "AIA" after your name (licensed members) or "Assoc. AIA" (unlicensed) is standard and firms notice it.
• Do not write "LEED certified". Buildings are certified; people are accredited (LEED AP) or Green Associates.

Three lines: license status and years, the building types and phases you know, your biggest project with its size, and one result or specialty. Architecture students and career changers use a short objective instead.

A good architecture bullet names the project type and size (units, square feet, construction cost, stories, construction type), your role and the phases you handled, the tools, and a measurable result. Here are seven rewrites drawn from real architectural work.

List 10 to 14 skills in three groups: practice skills, software and building knowledge. Put software the posting names first. If you are strong in Revit, say what you do with it (model management, families, phasing, worksharing) rather than just listing it.

• Practice: programming, schematic and design development, construction documents and detailing, code analysis, zoning and land use, permitting, specifications, bidding, construction administration, consultant coordination, client presentations.
• Software: Revit (and BIM 360 or Autodesk Construction Cloud), AutoCAD, Rhino and Grasshopper, SketchUp, Enscape, Lumion, V-Ray, Twinmotion, Navisworks, Bluebeam Revu, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, Procore or Newforma, Deltek Vantagepoint or Ajera for project accounting, Microsoft Office.
• Building knowledge: the construction types and building types you know (wood frame, mass timber, steel, concrete; multifamily, healthcare, education, commercial, civic), IBC and your state's code, ADA and Fair Housing accessibility, envelope and waterproofing detailing, sustainable design standards (LEED, Passive House, WELL).
• Leave off: "creative", "passionate about design", "hand sketching" unless the firm asks for it. Show design ability in the portfolio, not the skills list.

Firms hire architecture students and new graduates knowing they have not run a project. They are hiring for software speed, drawing quality, the ability to take direction and finish, and a sense of how buildings go together. Your resume and your portfolio sample have to show those together.

1. 1Header: name, contact, portfolio link, and your status (M.Arch candidate 2027, or B.Arch 2026, NAAB-accredited). Add "NCARB Record established" and any AXP hours.
2. 2Objective, two or three lines: program and graduation date, internship hours or a notable studio project, your software, the role and start date you want.
3. 3Software section near the top, honest about level: Revit (intermediate, two studios and one internship), Rhino and Grasshopper (advanced), Enscape, Adobe Creative Suite, laser cutting and 3D printing.
4. 4Experience: internships first with real drawing tasks (permit sets, redlines, renderings, models). Then studio work as "Selected academic projects" with type, size and what you produced. Then any job that shows reliability: retail, campus jobs, teaching assistant, construction labor.
5. 5Education with studio awards, design competitions, study abroad and relevant electives (structures, building technology, environmental systems). Attach a two- to three-page portfolio sample with at least one technical drawing.

• One page up to about 10 years; two pages for senior architects and project managers with a long project list. Many firms like a separate one-page project list with type, size, cost, role and phases for each project.
• Design matters, but readability matters more. A clean grid, one accent color, good typography and generous margins signal design judgment. Avoid two-column layouts with text in the margin, tiny type and graphics that an applicant tracking system cannot read.
• Portfolio: attach a two- to three-page PDF sample (under 10 MB) with at least one plan, one section or wall section and one detail, plus a link to the full portfolio. Firms judge the sample more than the resume.
• No photo, no date of birth. File names: Lastname-Firstname-Resume.pdf and Lastname-Firstname-Portfolio-Sample.pdf.
• Keywords to mirror from the posting: "Revit", "construction documents", "construction administration", "multifamily" or your building type, "project architect", "job captain", "code analysis", "consultant coordination", "LEED", "licensed" or "on the path to licensure", "AXP", "ARE".
• If you are a software, cloud or data architect, this page is not for you: those jobs sit in IT and their resumes follow the software engineer pattern (stack, systems, scale).
• In the UK the document is an architect CV and firms look for RIBA Part 1, 2 and 3, ARB registration and Revit or ArchiCAD. Two pages plus a portfolio sample is normal; no photo needed.

Run the finished resume through the cvplex ATS checker with the posting pasted in. It flags software the posting names that you left out, project bullets without a size or phase, and layout elements that a tracking system may misread.
