Structural Engineer Resume Examples & Writing Guide

This sample is a licensed project engineer at a mid-size building structures firm. The firm names are invented. Notice that licensure, building types, materials and codes are all on the first third of the page.

Structural engineering firms hire against a backlog of specific project types. The reader is matching you to work they already have.

• Licensure and states. PE, SE where the state requires one, EIT if you are early, plus which states you are licensed in and whether you hold an NCEES record for comity. This is the first filter.
• Building or structure types and sizes. Mid-rise residential, healthcare, education, industrial, bridges, retrofits. Square footage, stories and construction value place you instantly.
• Materials and lateral systems. Steel, cast-in-place and precast concrete, post-tensioned slabs, masonry, light-frame and mass timber, and the lateral system you have actually designed.
• Whether you have run a project. Producing a calculation package is one thing. Leading a project through construction administration, RFIs, submittals and site visits is what firms pay for.

Three or four lines: licensure, years, structure types and sizes, materials, codes and software.

The most common weakness on a structural resume is a list of activities with no building attached. Every bullet should carry the structure, the size and the system.

Name the codes as well as the software. A firm reads code familiarity as evidence you can be handed a project rather than trained on one.

• Materials and design codes: AISC 360 for steel, ACI 318 for concrete, TMS 402 for masonry, the National Design Specification for wood, AASHTO LRFD for bridges, ASCE 41 for existing buildings.
• Loading and general codes: International Building Code, ASCE 7 for wind, snow and seismic, plus the local amendments in your market.
• Systems: gravity framing, moment frames, braced frames, shear walls, diaphragms and collectors, post-tensioned slabs, precast, mass timber, foundations from spread footings to piles and mats.
• Software: ETABS, SAP2000, RISA-3D, RAM Structural System, SAFE, STAAD.Pro, CSiBridge, Enercalc, plus Revit and AutoCAD for documentation and Tekla if you do detailing coordination.
• Project skills: drawing set production and checking, specification writing, cost and constructability input, construction administration, RFI and submittal review, site observation, special inspection coordination.
• Existing structures: field measurement, destructive and non-destructive testing coordination, load rating, temporary shoring design, working without original drawings.

Licensure in the US is granted state by state, and the rules differ, including which states require a separate structural licence. Confirm the requirements with the board in your state rather than relying on a general summary.

1. 1Put your license type, the states and the status in the contact line: "PE: CO, UT, AZ" is enough, with the numbers available on request.
2. 2If you hold a separate SE license, say so explicitly, because several states require it for certain building types and firms hire specifically for it.
3. 3If you are pre-license, put "EIT" or "Engineer in Training" with the state and year, and add the date you plan to sit the PE exam. Firms track this closely for their staffing plan.
4. 4Mention an active NCEES record if you have one, since it is what makes comity licensure in new states straightforward for the firm.
5. 5List continuing education only if it is substantial and relevant, such as a seismic retrofit certificate program, not every one-hour webinar.
6. 6Keep degrees in a plain education block. Structural roles usually expect a master's degree, and firms notice whether the emphasis was structural.

New structural graduates all have similar coursework. What differentiates you is applied work, software fluency and how clearly you can explain a design decision.

• Lead with your EIT status and the exam dates. Firms plan around who will be licensable and when.
• Describe internships like jobs: what you modeled, what you detailed, which code you worked to and under whose seal.
• Present your thesis or capstone as a project with numbers: models run, parameters studied, the finding and how it was validated.
• Name the analysis software you can open and use without help, and be honest about which ones you have only seen in class.
• Add any field exposure: site visits, testing lab work, a summer with a contractor. Firms value new engineers who have seen how things get built.
• Keep it to one page and cut coursework lists once you have any real project work to show.

One page early on, two once you have several notable projects. Many structural firms also expect a project list, which is a separate document.

• Keep a short project list ready: name or type, size, construction value, structural system, your role. Firms ask for this at interview stage and it is far more persuasive than the resume alone.
• Mirror the posting's title: structural engineer, project engineer, structural designer, structural EIT, senior structural engineer.
• Put codes and software in a clearly labeled skills block so recruiters can keyword match them.
• No photo, no date of birth. Single column, standard headings, PDF.
• If you are applying across state lines, say plainly whether you are willing to pursue comity licensure and whether you would relocate.
