Civil Engineer Resume Examples & Writing Guide

This sample is for a licensed civil engineer with about seven years of experience who started as an engineer intern at a land development firm, moved to roadway and drainage design, and now manages municipal water resources projects as a PE. The name, firms and school are made up. Keep the structure and swap in your own projects, budgets, software and license.

Civil engineers are hired by a department manager or principal at a consulting firm, a public works director, or a project executive at a contractor. They read for four things.

• License status. PE (and which state), EIT or EI, or neither. A PE can seal plans and bill at a higher rate, so it changes what the firm can do with you. If you passed the FE and are waiting on paperwork, say so.
• What you have designed or built. Roadway, site development, stormwater, water and sewer, structures, geotechnical, construction. Name the project types, their size (acres, miles, linear feet, budget) and your part. "Assisted with design" says nothing; "designed storm drainage for a 2.4-mile widening" does.
• Software and standards. Civil 3D or MicroStation, the analysis programs for your discipline, and the standards you design to (state DOT, AASHTO, ACI, AISC, ASCE 7, the local stormwater manual).
• Whether you have dealt with reviewers, clients and contractors. Permit submittals, review comments, public meetings, RFIs and construction observation show you can carry a project past the calculations.

“I skim for PE or EIT, then I look at the projects. If someone tells me the acreage, the budget and which agency reviewed the plans, I know they did the work. If every bullet starts with 'assisted' or 'participated in', I assume they watched someone else do it.”

Three or four lines under your name: license status, years and discipline, the project types and sizes you have handled, daily software, and one result. New graduates write a short objective instead and lead with the FE exam, the degree and internships.

The most common problem on civil engineer resumes is bullets copied from a job description: "assisted with design," "prepared drawings," "attended meetings." Managers know the duties. They want the project, its size, the tool and the result. Every project bullet gets a size number (acres, miles, cost or fee) and, where you can, a result number.

Split skills into three short groups so a manager can find what they need: what you design, what software you use, and which standards you design to. Keep 12–16 items, match the posting's words, and list only software you could use tomorrow without a refresher.

• Site development: grading, storm drainage, water and sewer, erosion and sediment control

• Construction: quantity takeoffs, cost estimating, scheduling, RFIs and submittals, construction observation

Standards to name: AASHTO, your state DOT standard specifications, MUTCD, ACI 318, AISC 360, ASCE 7, IBC, NPDES and the local stormwater manual. Soft skills belong in the bullets: a permit cleared in one round shows you write clearly; a public meeting you ran shows you can talk to residents.

Civil engineering is a licensed profession in the US, and the license is the most important credential on the page.

• FE exam and EIT/EI. The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is run by NCEES; passing it and applying to your state board makes you an Engineer in Training (EIT) or Engineer Intern (EI), depending on the state's term. Most civil grads take FE Civil in their senior year. List: "Engineer in Training (EIT), Colorado, 2025" or, if pending, "FE Civil passed, April 2026; EIT application submitted."
• PE license. The Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) Civil exam has five depth options: Construction, Geotechnical, Structural, Transportation, and Water Resources and Environmental. Most states require about four years of experience under a licensed engineer before licensure; some let you sit the exam earlier, so check your state board. List each state: "Professional Engineer (PE), Civil, Texas, 2022" (the license number is optional). Mention an NCEES Record if you have one; it speeds up licensure in other states.
• Construction and field: OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour Construction, ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I, state DOT materials or erosion control certifications, and the Certified Construction Manager (CCM) from CMAA for senior construction engineers.
• Nice to have by discipline: Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) for water resources; Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) for traffic (requires a PE); Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV SP) or LEED Green Associate for public works; Project Management Professional (PMP) for project managers; Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC).

Education: list the degree, school, year and "ABET-accredited" if it is, because most state boards require an ABET degree for licensure. A master's is common for structural and geotechnical engineers. New graduates can add GPA above 3.3, relevant coursework and the senior design project; after your first engineering job, keep only the degree line.

Firms hire entry-level civil engineers every year because EITs are how they grow their PE bench. A new-grad resume has to show that you can pass exams (FE), that you have touched real projects (internships, co-ops, senior design) and that you can use the software. "Civil engineer resume for freshers" is the Indian-English search; in the US say "entry level" or "new grad."

1. 1Take FE Civil before you graduate and put the result under your name: "EIT" if certified, otherwise "FE Civil passed" with the month.
2. 2Write a two-line objective naming the discipline (site development, transportation, structures, water resources, construction) and your software. Do not write "seeking a challenging position."
3. 3Turn internships and co-ops into experience entries with numbers: how many plan sets, what acreage, which software, which agency reviewed them.
4. 4Add a Projects section for your senior design project and student work (steel bridge, concrete canoe, ASCE chapter): the design problem, the tools, the result.
5. 5Include construction, surveying or labor jobs, even summer ones. A season on a survey or paving crew tells a manager you understand how plans get built.
6. 6Get OSHA 10 online if you are applying to contractors or field roles. One page, PDF, GPA if 3.3 or above.

• One page through about 8 years of experience; two pages for PEs who manage projects or people. Senior engineers keep a separate project list for proposals rather than stretching the resume.
• Order: name with PE or EIT, title line with discipline, summary, experience, skills (design, software, standards), licenses and certifications, education. New grads move education above experience.

• File type: PDF unless the posting or a government portal asks for Word. Federal (USAJOBS) applications want longer resumes with hours per week and supervisor contacts; follow their format.
• No photo, no date of birth, city and state only. A LinkedIn link is fine; a portfolio link helps for structural and site work if it shows plan sheets you are allowed to share.

Large engineering firms, state DOTs and contractors run resumes through applicant tracking systems, and recruiters search them by keyword. Mirror the posting's exact words: if it says "OpenRoads Designer," do not write "Bentley software." Write "Professional Engineer (PE)" once so both the software and the reader find it.
