Mechanical Engineer CV Examples & Writing Guide

A mechanical engineer CV gets an interview when the engineering manager can see the products or systems you designed, the CAD and analysis tools you use daily, results with numbers (cost, weight, cycle time, test outcomes), and your credentials (accredited degree, IMechE membership, IEng or CEng, CSWP). Below is a full mechanical design engineer CV example plus personal statements for graduate, manufacturing, building services and senior engineers.

Mechanical engineer CV example (mechanical design engineer, CEng)

This CV is for a mechanical design engineer at an industrial machinery manufacturer, seven years out of university and a Chartered Engineer. The name and companies are made up. Every bullet names the product or system, the tool and a measurable outcome. Engineering managers skim for exactly that.

What an engineering manager checks in the first ten seconds

Mechanical engineering CVs are read by engineering managers first and recruiters second. Managers skip the adjectives and look for four things, usually in this order.

  • What you designed or analysed, and for what product. "Designed components" means nothing. "Designed the infeed and guarding for a 40-case-a-minute case packer" tells them your scale, industry and level of ownership.
  • Tools. The CAD package (SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo, NX, CATIA), analysis tools (ANSYS, Abaqus, SolidWorks Simulation, MATLAB), and PLM or ERP (Windchill, Teamcenter, SAP). Managers hire for their toolchain because retraining takes months.
  • Numbers. Cost, weight, part count, cycle time, test results, failure rates, tolerances held, programme. One per bullet. Engineers who cannot quantify their own work worry managers.
  • Credentials and standards. An accredited degree, IMechE membership, IEng or CEng (or progress towards it), CSWP or similar, and the standards you work to (BS 8888, BS EN ISO 12100, the Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, PD 5500, CIBSE guides). Chartership matters in consultancy, defence, nuclear, rail and design authority roles; in product design it is a plus, not a filter.

“I look for the product, the CAD tool and one number per bullet. If a design engineer tells me they cut part count or cost on a real product, I already know they have been through a release cycle. That is worth more to me than a list of modules.”

Engineering experience and project bullets: weak to strong

The most common weakness on mechanical engineering CVs is a bullet that describes a responsibility ("responsible for design of mechanical components"). Managers want the object, the method, the tool and the number. This pattern works for jobs, placements and university projects alike.

Weak (responsibility)Strong (object, method, tool, number)
Designed mechanical components using CAD.Designed the frame, infeed and guarding for a 40-case-a-minute case packer (1,100-part assembly) in SolidWorks and released 40+ drawings to BS 8888 through Windchill.
Performed finite element analysis.Ran static and fatigue FEA in ANSYS Mechanical on the main frame and lift arms, cutting frame weight 22% at a 2.5 safety factor; validated with strain gauge testing on the first build.
Worked on cost reduction projects.Cut unit cost 14% (£7,800 per machine, about £330k a year) by converting weldments to laser-cut sheet metal and standardising fasteners and bearings across three machine sizes.
Supported testing and certification.Supported BS EN 60335-2-40 safety testing and Eurovent performance testing on two rooftop unit ranges; closed 100% of test findings before the certification deadline.
Improved product quality.Reduced cabinet air leakage from 3.1% to 1.4% of rated flow by redesigning panel seams and gaskets, verified in the test chamber.
Created documentation and BOMs.Released 120+ drawings and BOMs in SAP, processed 10 to 15 ECNs a month and cut drawing rework by half by introducing a checked drawing template.
Participated in final-year project.Led the mechanical design of a 4-student automated bottle-capping cell (SolidWorks, servo actuator, Arduino control) that capped 30 bottles a minute with a 99% success rate at the final demonstration.
Member of Formula Student team.Suspension lead on a 25-student Formula Student team: designed double-wishbone geometry and machined uprights (SolidWorks, ANSYS), cutting unsprung mass 1.8 kg per corner; the car finished 14th of 80 at Formula Student UK.
Numbers come from your design reviews, cost roll-ups, test reports and ECN logs. Keep a private project log with one line per project: what, tool, result. It becomes your CV and your interview stories.

Mechanical engineer CV skills section

Group technical skills so a recruiter can match them to the advert in seconds: CAD, analysis, standards and methods, manufacturing knowledge, software. Twelve to sixteen items, and name products, not categories ("SolidWorks", not "3D modelling software").

  • CAD and PLM: SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, PTC Creo, Siemens NX, CATIA, AutoCAD, Fusion 360; Windchill, Teamcenter, SolidWorks PDM; Revit MEP for building services.
  • Analysis: ANSYS (Mechanical, Fluent), Abaqus, SolidWorks Simulation, COMSOL, hand calculations for stress, fatigue, heat transfer and fluid systems; MATLAB, Python or Excel for calculation scripts and test data.
  • Design methods and standards: GD&T to BS 8888 (ISO GPS) or ASME Y14.5, tolerance stack-ups, DFM/DFA, DFMEA and PFMEA, design for Six Sigma, BS EN ISO 12100 and BS EN ISO 13849 machinery safety, PD 5500 and the Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 for pressure systems, CIBSE guides for building services, ISO 13485 and design controls for medical devices.
  • Manufacturing knowledge: machining, sheet metal, welding, casting, injection moulding, additive manufacturing; process capability, PPAP and control plans for automotive; lean and Six Sigma tools.
  • Systems and mechanisms: servo and pneumatic motion sizing, bearings, gears and belts, linear guides, hydraulics, thermal systems, building services load calculations (IES VE, Hevacomp).
  • Working skills managers screen for: writing a clear design review, working with machinists and suppliers, running tests and documenting results, holding a programme, and explaining a trade-off to a non-engineer.

Leave off Microsoft Office and "problem solving". If a skill would appear on every engineer's CV, it is not helping yours.

IEng, CEng, CSWP and other credentials: how to list them

There is no licence to practise mechanical engineering in the UK and no equivalent of a state P.E. Professional registration with the Engineering Council, usually through the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), is the credential managers recognise, alongside a handful of certifications. List each with the issuer and year. Never inflate: "working towards CEng" and "CEng" are different lines on the page and different things in the interview.

  • IMechE membership. Join as a student, then as an Associate Member once you graduate, and list it as "IMechE Associate Member, 2026". Some employers run accredited graduate schemes (the IMechE Monitored Professional Development Scheme) that structure your route to registration.
  • Incorporated (IEng) and Chartered Engineer (CEng). Registered by the Engineering Council through a licensed institution such as the IMechE (or the IET, CIBSE or RAeS) against the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence and Commitment (UK-SPEC), usually after an accredited degree (an MEng for CEng, a BEng for IEng, or further learning), several years of responsible experience and a professional review interview. Not a legal requirement, but expected for senior roles in consultancy, defence, nuclear, rail and design authority work; a plus in product design. List the year and add "CEng" after your name.
  • CAD certifications: Certified SolidWorks Associate (CSWA) and Professional (CSWP) from Dassault Systèmes, Autodesk Certified Professional in Inventor or AutoCAD, PTC Creo certifications. CSWP is the one design managers notice.
  • Quality and manufacturing: Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt, Chartered Quality Institute (CQI) membership, ISO 9001 internal or lead auditor courses, lean training from your employer or a university.
  • Building services: CIBSE membership (MCIBSE), BREEAM AP, CIBSE Low Carbon Consultant, and an F-Gas certificate for hands-on refrigeration roles.
  • Training worth one line: GD&T (BS 8888 or ASME Y14.5) courses, FMEA training, ISO 13485 or design controls training, welding inspection basics. Give the provider and hours.
  • Education: list the degree as "MEng Mechanical Engineering" or "BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering" with the classification, and add "IMechE-accredited" if it is; it affects your route to IEng or CEng. An HNC, HND or engineering degree apprenticeship is a different qualification; name it exactly as issued ("HNC Mechanical Engineering, Level 4").
Do not write "Chartered Engineer" as a job title or after your name if you are not registered. The Engineering Council treats CEng and IEng as protected titles, and every engineering manager can check its online register in about 30 seconds.

Graduate mechanical engineer CV (no experience)

"No experience" for a mechanical engineering graduate usually means no full-time job yet. You still have placements or a year in industry, a final-year project, competition teams, lab work and coursework projects. Graduate recruiters expect exactly those, written like engineering work: object, tool, number.

  1. 1Header, then a two-line career objective naming the specialism (design, manufacturing, building services, test) and the tools you already know. Add your IMechE student or Associate membership; it shows you are on the route to registration.
  2. 2Education first: degree, university, graduation month and year, accreditation, classification (or predicted grade), and two or three relevant modules only if they match the advert (machine design, heat transfer, control, FEA).
  3. 3Projects section above or in place of experience: final-year project, Formula Student, rocketry, robotics, research. Two to three bullets each with the tool and a measurable result. Give your specific role, not the team's.
  4. 4Placements and a year in industry as experience, with the company's product and your deliverables (drawings released, fixtures built, tests run, cost saved).
  5. 5Skills grouped as CAD, analysis, programming and workshop skills (you can run a lathe, mill, 3D printer or weld). Then qualifications (CSWA, IMechE membership), one page if you can, two at most.
Final-year project entry
Final-year project: Automated Bottle-Capping Cell, Sep 2025 to May 2026 (team of 4, mechanical lead). Designed the capping head, cam-driven indexing table and guarding in SolidWorks; sized the servo and pneumatic gripper; machined 12 custom parts. The cell capped 30 bottles a minute at 99% success in the final demonstration and came in £300 under the £2,000 budget.
Placement entry
Mechanical Engineering Placement Student, agricultural machinery manufacturer, summer 2025 (12 weeks). Redesigned a hydraulic hose route on a sprayer boom in Creo to remove two chafe points found in field returns; released 9 drawings and a service bulletin, and built a test fixture that cut hose validation time from 3 days to 1.
Research or lab entry
Undergraduate Research Assistant, Thermal Systems Lab, Jan to Dec 2025. Built and instrumented a microchannel heat exchanger test rig (thermocouples, pressure transducers, LabVIEW), ran 60+ test points and analysed the data in MATLAB for a conference paper (second author).
If you hold an HNC, HND or diploma in mechanical engineering rather than a degree, name it exactly ("HND Mechanical Engineering, Level 5") and follow the same rule: projects with tools and numbers beat a list of modules. The same applies to a "fresher" CV in India for a diploma or degree holder.

Format, length and ATS keywords

  • Length: two pages is standard for experienced UK engineers; one full page for graduates. Senior engineers with patents and publications still keep to two pages and move the detail into a separate project portfolio (PDF with images and results); mention it in the header.
  • Order for experienced engineers: header, personal statement, experience, skills grouped by type, professional registration and qualifications, education. Order for graduates: header, career objective, education, projects, placements, skills, qualifications.
  • Format: one column, standard fonts, no photo (not expected in the UK), no skills bars, restrained colour. Engineering employers use Workday, Taleo, iCIMS and SuccessFactors; a two-column template often scrambles the skills block during parsing.
  • Keywords to mirror from the advert: the CAD and analysis tools by name, "GD&T", "DFM", "FEA", "tolerance analysis", "design review", "BOM", "ECN", "prototype", "test", the standards they cite (BS EN, ISO, PD 5500, CIBSE, UKCA and CE marking) and the product type. If the title is "Design Engineer" or "Product Development Engineer", put it in your headline and keep "mechanical engineer" in the personal statement.
  • In the US the document is called a resume, usually one page until about 8 to 10 years, and employers look for a state P.E. licence instead of CEng; the tools-and-numbers advice is the same everywhere.
  • Save as PDF: Ethan-Nakamura-Mechanical-Engineer-CV.pdf. Keep drawings and images out of the CV itself; parsers cannot read them.

Run the file through the cvplex ATS checker with the job advert pasted in. It shows which tools, standards and methods in the advert are missing from your bullets.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a mechanical engineering CV?

Open with a personal statement naming your specialism, years, tools and one shipped result. Write experience bullets with the product, the method, the tool and a number (cost, weight, cycle time, test result). Group skills by CAD, analysis, standards and manufacturing. List IMechE membership, IEng or CEng and CSWP with years, and keep it to two pages.

What skills should a mechanical engineer put on a CV?

Name products and standards: SolidWorks, Creo, NX or Inventor; ANSYS, Abaqus or SolidWorks Simulation; MATLAB or Python; GD&T to BS 8888 or ASME Y14.5, tolerance stack-ups, DFM/DFA, DFMEA; Windchill or Teamcenter; and manufacturing knowledge (machining, sheet metal, moulding). Twelve to sixteen items grouped by type, no Microsoft Office.

How do I write a mechanical engineering CV with no experience?

Lead with education and a projects section: final-year project, Formula Student or robotics, research and coursework projects, each with your role, the tools and a measured result. Add placements or a year in industry, then skills grouped by CAD, analysis and workshop skills. Put IMechE membership and CSWA in qualifications. One page if you can.

Should I put IMechE membership or "working towards CEng" on my CV?

Yes, in the qualifications section: "IMechE Associate Member, 2026, working towards CEng" or the name of your accredited graduate scheme. It signals you are on the registration path, which matters for consultancy, defence, nuclear and rail roles. Do not put IEng or CEng after your name until the Engineering Council has registered you.

What is a good career objective for a mechanical engineer CV?

Two lines for graduates only: the degree and date, your target specialism, your tools and one project or credential. "MEng graduate (July 2026, IMechE-accredited) with a year in industry and a Formula Student suspension lead role; SolidWorks (CSWA), ANSYS, MATLAB. Seeking a graduate design engineer post in machinery or automotive." Experienced engineers use a personal statement.

How long should a mechanical engineer CV be?

Two pages for most UK engineers, including senior engineers with patents or publications; one full page is fine for graduates. Put drawings and images in a separate portfolio, not in the CV.

Is a mechanical engineer CV different from a resume?

In the UK, India and Australia, "CV" means the standard job document, and a UK engineering CV usually runs to two pages. In the US a resume is the one- to two-page document for industry jobs, a CV is the long academic document, and US employers look for a P.E. licence instead of CEng. The content rules are the same: product, tool, number.
