Financial Analyst Resume Examples & Writing Guide

A financial analyst resume gets shortlisted when the hiring manager can see the size of the numbers you owned, the models and systems you built in (Excel, SQL, the planning tool), how accurate your forecasts were, and what a decision-maker did because of your analysis. One page for most analysts, with the CFA or FMVA status near the top.

Financial analyst resume example (FP&A, 7 years)

A one-page resume for a senior FP&A analyst with seven years across healthcare and consumer goods. The person and the companies are invented. Notice that every job states how big the budget or revenue base was, every bullet ends in a dollar figure or a decision, and the tools are named where they were used.

Charlotte, NC · (704) 555-0148 · priya.raman@email.com · linkedin.com/in/priyaraman-fpa

Summary

FP&A analyst with 7 years supporting operating budgets from $60M to $840M in healthcare and consumer goods. Builds the driver-based forecast, the monthly variance pack and the three-statement model that the CFO takes to the board. Held rolling forecast accuracy inside 3% on revenue for eight straight quarters and cut the close-to-report cycle from 9 business days to 5. CFA Level II candidate; heavy Excel, SQL and Workday Adaptive Planning.

Experience

Senior Financial Analyst, FP&A · Harbor Ridge Health Partners (regional multi-site healthcare provider, $840M net revenue, 4,100 staff), Charlotte, NC

Mar 2023 – Present

  • Own the annual operating budget and the 12-month rolling forecast for 11 clinic sites and $340M of the expense base, working with 11 site directors on volume, staffing and supply drivers.
  • Rebuilt the revenue forecast around patient visit volume, payer mix and provider productivity instead of prior-year growth rates; revenue forecast variance fell from 7.8% to under 3% and has stayed there for 8 quarters.
  • Automated the monthly variance pack with Power Query and a SQL extract from the EHR data warehouse, cutting the close-to-report cycle from 9 business days to 5 and removing about 20 hours of manual work per month.
  • Built the labor model behind a staffing review that moved 14 float-pool nurses to the two highest-demand sites, saving $1.9M in agency spend in the first full year.

Financial Analyst · Calderon Beverage Group (mid-market beverage manufacturer, $310M revenue, 4 plants), Charlotte, NC

Jul 2020 – Mar 2023

  • Ran gross margin analysis for 240 SKUs across 4 plants, rebuilding standard costs each year and flagging 18 SKUs whose margin sat below 12%; 11 were repriced or discontinued, adding roughly $2.4M of annual gross profit.
  • Built the three-statement model and DCF used in the acquisition review of a $23M co-packer, including a working capital bridge and three demand scenarios.
  • Produced the weekly cash forecast (13-week) and the covenant compliance schedule for a $75M revolving credit facility; no covenant surprise in 32 months.
  • Cut the capex approval backlog by writing a standard payback and IRR template that plant managers filled in themselves, taking average approval time from 19 days to 6.

Financial Analyst I · Meridian Grove Insurance Services (property and casualty agency group, $60M revenue), Raleigh, NC

Jun 2019 – Jul 2020

  • Prepared the monthly close package for 6 branch offices, including accruals, commission reconciliation and a variance commentary on any line over $25K or 10%.
  • Reconciled a commission subledger with 4,800 monthly records and found a $310K posting error that had run undetected for two quarters.

Put a dollar size on every job, not just on your bullets. "Financial Analyst, $310M revenue manufacturer" tells a recruiter more in six words than a paragraph of duties.

What finance hiring managers look at first

Analyst postings pull hundreds of applicants because the title covers everything from a reporting job to a valuation job. Hiring managers scan for four things in roughly this order.

  • Scale. What size of budget, revenue or portfolio did you touch? A $40M budget and a $900M budget are different jobs. If you never name a number, you get read as junior.
  • Type of analyst work. FP&A (budget, forecast, variance), corporate development (valuation, M&A), treasury, credit or reporting. Your bullets should use the posting's words, because a treasury team does not want a pure reporting analyst.
  • Tool depth. Everyone writes "advanced Excel". Managers look for evidence: the model you built, the SQL you wrote, the planning system (Adaptive, Anaplan, Hyperion) you administered.
  • Whether anything happened. The strongest bullets end with a decision: a SKU repriced, headcount moved, a deal passed on.

I can tell in fifteen seconds whether someone was a report runner or an analyst. Report runners describe the deliverable: 'prepared monthly reporting package.' Analysts describe the finding and what the business did about it. The second person gets the call.

Financial analyst resume summary and objective examples

Three lines at the top, no more. Say the years, the size of what you supported, the two or three things you are actually good at, and one number. Use an objective only if you have no finance work history yet.

FP&A analyst, mid-level
FP&A analyst with 5 years supporting a $200M SaaS business. Owns the driver-based revenue forecast, headcount plan and monthly variance pack for 6 departments. Held quarterly revenue forecast error under 4% for two years and rebuilt the ARR bridge that the CFO now uses in the board deck. Strong Excel, SQL and Anaplan.
Corporate / valuation focus
Financial analyst with 4 years in corporate development at a mid-market industrial group. Built the three-statement models, DCF and comparable company analysis for 14 screened targets and 3 closed acquisitions totaling $86M. Handles diligence request lists, quality of earnings review and integration synergies modeling. CFA Level II candidate.
Objective, entry level or fresher
Finance graduate (B.S. Finance, May 2026) seeking a financial analyst role in FP&A. Built a full three-statement model and DCF for a public retailer as a capstone project, completed a 12-week corporate finance internship supporting monthly close, and holds the FMVA certification. Comfortable in Excel, Power BI and basic SQL.
Career changer from accounting
Staff accountant with 4 years in close and reporting, moving into FP&A. Already builds the department budget templates, the monthly variance commentary and the rolling headcount schedule for a 300-person services firm. CPA-eligible with 120 credit hours; completed FMVA and 40 hours of financial modeling coursework in 2025.
Do not open with "detail-oriented finance professional seeking a challenging role". It says nothing about you, and it is the single most common first line in this pile.

Work experience bullets: weak versus strong

The pattern that works here is: what you built or analyzed, on what scale, with what tool, and what changed. Aim for a number in at least three bullets per job.

Weak (duty only)Strong (scale, tool, result)
Responsible for monthly reporting and analysis.Produce the monthly close pack and variance commentary for a $180M expense base across 9 cost centers, explaining every line over $50K or 8% within 2 business days of close.
Built financial models in Excel.Built a driver-based three-statement model with 4 scenarios that the executive team used to decide against a $12M plant expansion after the base case showed a 9-year payback.
Improved forecast accuracy.Replaced prior-year-plus-growth forecasting with volume and price drivers, taking revenue forecast error from 7.8% to 2.6% over four quarters.
Used SQL and Power BI for reporting.Wrote 14 SQL views against the ERP database and published 5 Power BI dashboards, which ended roughly 40 ad hoc report requests per quarter from sales and operations.
Supported cash flow management.Own the 13-week cash forecast and weekly borrowing base certificate for a $75M revolver; forecast has landed within $400K of actual cash for 18 consecutive weeks.
Worked on cost saving initiatives.Analyzed 240 SKUs by contribution margin and flagged 18 below 12%; 11 were repriced or dropped, adding about $2.4M of annual gross profit.
Helped with the ERP implementation.Mapped 320 GL accounts and rebuilt 18 management reports during a NetSuite migration, and ran parallel reporting for 2 months with no restatement of prior results.

Build my financial analyst resume

Skills for a financial analyst resume

Keep the list to 10 to 14 items and split it so a screener can find what they need. Only list a system you could be asked about in an interview. "Anaplan" on a resume invites an Anaplan question.

  • Analysis: budgeting and forecasting, variance analysis, scenario and sensitivity analysis, margin analysis, capital budgeting (NPV, IRR, payback)
  • Modeling: three-statement models, DCF, comparable company analysis, working capital and headcount models
  • Excel specifics rather than the word advanced: XLOOKUP and INDEX/MATCH, pivot tables, Power Query, scenario manager, model documentation
  • Data: SQL (joins, CTEs, window functions), Power BI, Tableau, Alteryx, VBA macros
  • Systems: Workday Adaptive Planning, Anaplan, Oracle Hyperion or EPM, SAP FICO, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics 365
  • Market data for investment roles: Bloomberg Terminal, S&P Capital IQ, FactSet, PitchBook
  • Accounting foundation: US GAAP basics, accruals, revenue recognition (ASC 606), month-end close support
  • Communication: monthly business review decks, board packages, variance commentary a non-finance manager can act on
Rank the list to match the posting. An FP&A job wants forecasting and Adaptive first. A corporate development job wants DCF, comps and Capital IQ first. Same person, two orders.

Certifications, the CFA and how to list your degree

Finance is one of the few fields where a partly finished credential still helps you, as long as you state it honestly. Never write "CFA" after your name unless you hold the charter.

CFA in progress
CFA Level II candidate, CFA Institute (passed Level I, February 2025). Level II exam scheduled May 2026.
Modeling certificate
Financial Modeling & Valuation Analyst (FMVA), Corporate Finance Institute, 2025
Accounting side
Certified Management Accountant (CMA), IMA, 2024 · CPA-eligible (150 credit hours completed, Part 1 of the CPA Exam passed)
Degree line, recent graduate
B.S. Finance, Queen City University, Charlotte, NC, May 2026. GPA 3.7/4.0. Coursework: corporate valuation, financial modeling, econometrics, database systems. Investment Club portfolio team (managed $120K of the student fund).
  • A finance, accounting, economics or business degree is the usual entry ticket. Engineering, math and statistics degrees also get through if the resume shows finance coursework or a modeling project.
  • List GPA only if it is 3.5 or above and you graduated within the last three years. After that, drop it.
  • An MBA goes above your bachelor's degree with the concentration named. If you are mid-program, write "MBA, Finance concentration, expected May 2027".
  • Short course certificates (Excel, SQL, Power BI, Bloomberg Market Concepts) belong in one compact line, not one line each.

Entry level and no experience: what goes on the page instead

This is the most searched version of the question, and freshers usually make the same mistake: they list coursework and stop. Coursework proves attendance. Projects, internships and numbers prove you can do the work.

  1. 1Header, then a two-line objective naming the exact role (FP&A analyst, credit analyst, reporting analyst). Vague ambition reads as no direction.
  2. 2Education with the graduation month, relevant coursework in one line, and GPA if it is 3.5 or higher.
  3. 3A projects section, placed above work history. Two or three projects, each with what you built, the data you used and a finding: "Built a 5-year three-statement model and DCF for a listed apparel retailer; the base case implied the stock was about 18% overvalued at the time."
  4. 4Internships or any job with money, deadlines or data in it. Retail cash handling, campus treasurer, bookkeeping for a family business, a data assistant role. Quantify all of it.
  5. 5A technical skills block with proof levels: "Excel (advanced: Power Query, pivot tables, XLOOKUP)", "SQL (SELECT, joins, aggregations; 40-hour course)", "Power BI (3 dashboards built)".
Project bullet, capstone model
Built a 5-year three-statement model and DCF for a listed regional grocer using 10-K and 10-Q filings, with three revenue scenarios and a sensitivity table on WACC and terminal growth; presented the 12-slide recommendation to a faculty panel.
Internship bullet
Supported month-end close at a 250-person logistics firm for 12 weeks: prepared 24 account reconciliations, drafted variance commentary for 6 cost centers and rebuilt the fuel cost tracker in Power Query, cutting the update from 3 hours to 20 minutes.
Non-finance job, made relevant
Handled $9K to $14K in daily till and deposit reconciliation as a shift lead, with zero unexplained variances over 16 months, and built the weekly staffing and labor cost sheet used by 3 supervisors.
If you are applying from outside the US, keep the US conventions on this page: no photo, no date of birth, no marital status, and call it a resume. Many financial analyst templates circulating online are Indian or UK CV formats with a photo box, and US screeners are told to reject those.

Format, length, file type and ATS keywords

  • One page up to about eight years of experience. Two pages once you manage analysts, run a full planning cycle for multiple business units, or carry a real deal list.
  • Reverse chronological. Functional and skills-first layouts get read as a cover-up in finance, where dates and progression matter.
  • Single column, no text boxes, no icons, no charts of your own skill levels. Two-column templates lose the right column in some parsers, and a finance screener does not need a design flourish.
  • Send a PDF unless the posting or the recruiter asks for a Word file. Name it firstname-lastname-financial-analyst.pdf.
  • Mirror the posting's own words in your skills and bullets: FP&A, variance analysis, rolling forecast, driver-based planning, month-end close, three-statement model, ad hoc analysis, business partnering, ERP name, planning tool name.
  • Keep the same job titles that appear on your payslips, then add a plain-English version in parentheses if your internal title was odd: "Finance Business Partner II (Senior Financial Analyst)".

One habit worth copying: keep a running file of every number you produce, with the date and the source. Six months later you will not have to guess whether the saving was $1.9M or $2.4M. Guessing is how people get caught in interviews.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a financial analyst resume with no experience?

Lead with a two-line objective naming the exact analyst role, then education with your graduation month, then a projects section above work history. Each project needs a build, a data source and a finding, such as a DCF that implied a stock was overvalued. Add a technical skills block with proof levels and one finishable certificate like FMVA or Bloomberg Market Concepts. Any job where you handled money, data or deadlines counts, so quantify it.

What skills should I put on a financial analyst resume?

Ten to fourteen, grouped. Analysis skills (forecasting, variance analysis, scenario modeling, NPV and IRR), modeling skills (three-statement, DCF, comps), Excel specifics rather than the word "advanced", SQL and a BI tool, and the actual systems you used such as Adaptive Planning, Anaplan, Hyperion, NetSuite or SAP. Reorder the list for each posting so the first three items match what the job asks for.

Should a financial analyst resume have a summary or an objective?

A summary if you have worked in finance: years, size of the budget or portfolio, your two strongest areas, and one number such as forecast accuracy. An objective only for new graduates and career changers, and only if it names the role you want. Either way, keep it to three lines and never make it about what you are looking for in an employer.

How long should a financial analyst resume be?

One page for roughly the first eight years. Two pages once you own a planning cycle for multiple business units, manage analysts, or have a deal list worth reading. Going to two pages to fit more duty statements makes the resume weaker, not stronger.

How do I list the CFA on my resume before passing all three levels?

Write what is true: "CFA Level II candidate, CFA Institute (passed Level I, 2025)". Do not put the letters CFA after your name until you hold the charter, and do not write "CFA (in progress)", which reads as vague. Put the line in your certifications block, or right under your name if the posting asks for CFA progress.

What is the difference between a financial analyst resume and an FP&A analyst resume?

The bullets, not the format. An FP&A version emphasizes budgeting, rolling forecasts, variance analysis, headcount planning and business partnering with department heads. A general or corporate development version emphasizes valuation, three-statement models, diligence and market data tools. Write one master file, then move the matching bullets to the top for each application.

Is a financial analyst CV the same as a financial analyst resume?

Same content, different conventions. In the US you send a one to two page resume with no photo and no personal details. In the UK and much of Europe the same document is called a CV and may run to two pages by default. If you are applying to US employers, use the US version on this page even if your file is named CV.
