Accountant Resume Examples & Writing Guide

An accountant resume gets an interview when the top third of the page makes four things clear: your CPA status (licensed, sections passed, or eligible), the scope you owned (month-end close, reconciliations, tax returns, audits, with dollar sizes), your systems (NetSuite, SAP, QuickBooks, Excel level) and one result, such as a shorter close or a clean audit. Below: a full sample resume, summaries, bullets and skills.

Accountant resume example (senior accountant, CPA)

This sample is for a licensed CPA with about six years of experience who started in public accounting and moved into industry. The name and employers are made up. If you are a staff accountant or a new graduate, keep the layout and scale the scope down; there are summaries for both further down the page.

Priya Ramaswamy, CPA

Senior Accountant

Dallas, TX · (214) 555-0163 · priya.ramaswamy@email.com · linkedin.com/in/priyaramaswamy-cpa

Summary

Senior accountant and Texas-licensed CPA with 6 years across public accounting and a $180M manufacturing company. Owns the month-end close, 45 balance sheet reconciliations and the fixed-asset ledger. Cut the close from 9 to 5 business days and supported three consecutive external audits with no adjusting entries. Advanced in NetSuite, Excel (Power Query, pivot tables) and BlackLine.

Experience

Senior Accountant · Privately held industrial manufacturer ($180M revenue, 4 plants)

Feb 2023 – Present

  • Run the month-end close for four plants and two intercompany entities; shortened the close from 9 to 5 business days by moving accruals and recurring entries to a standard checklist in BlackLine.
  • Prepare and review 45 balance sheet reconciliations a month (cash, AR, inventory reserves, accrued liabilities) with variances over $5K researched and documented before day 5.
  • Own the fixed-asset ledger ($38M gross, about 1,100 assets): additions, disposals, depreciation and the annual physical verification at each plant.
  • Lead the PBC (prepared-by-client) list for the annual external audit, 70+ items, delivered on schedule for three years with no proposed adjusting entries.
  • Adopted ASC 842 for 23 equipment and facility leases in 2023, building the lease schedules and journal entries the auditors relied on.

Staff Accountant, then Senior Associate · Regional public accounting firm (audit and tax, 60 staff)

Sep 2020 – Jan 2023

  • Prepared 60+ business returns per busy season (Forms 1120, 1120-S and 1065) and 40+ individual returns in CCH Axcess for clients with $2M to $50M in revenue.
  • Performed audit fieldwork on 8 to 10 engagements a year for manufacturers and nonprofits: cash, revenue, inventory counts and fixed assets, using CaseWare.
  • Reviewed the work of two first-year associates in 2022 and cut review notes on their files by about a third over the year.
  • Passed all four sections of the CPA exam within 14 months while working full time; licensed in Texas in 2022.

Every bullet on this resume has a size (dollars, number of entities, returns or reconciliations) or a result (days cut, zero adjustments). An accounting manager can picture the job from the numbers alone. That is what you are aiming for.

What an accounting manager checks before reading the rest

Accounting hiring managers and the recruiters who screen for them told us the same short list. If these four are easy to find, they read the whole page.

  • CPA status, exactly as it is. Licensed, passed sections, exam candidate, or eligible (150 credit hours). "CPA" in the header without a license is the fastest way to lose the interview later, so be precise.
  • Scope of the close. Did you own the close or post entries in it? How many entities, reconciliations, dollars of revenue? "Assisted with month-end close" tells them nothing about your level.
  • Systems. The ERP (NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Sage Intacct, QuickBooks), the close or reconciliation tool (BlackLine, FloQast), the tax software (CCH Axcess, UltraTax CS, Lacerte, ProSeries, Drake) and your real Excel level. Switching ERPs is a real cost to them.
  • Public or industry background, and which industry. A manufacturer wants inventory and cost experience; a SaaS company wants ASC 606 revenue; a nonprofit wants fund accounting and Form 990. Say which you have done.

The first thing I check is whether the CPA in the header is a license or a hope. The second is whether they ran the close or sat next to it. Everything else I can find out in the interview.

How to put the CPA on your resume (licensed, candidate or eligible)

The CPA is a state license, issued by a state board of accountancy after you pass the four-part Uniform CPA Examination (since 2024: three core sections, FAR, AUD and REG, plus one discipline section you choose from BAR, ISC or TCP) and meet that state's education (usually 150 semester hours) and experience rules. Requirements differ by state, so name the state. Here is how to word each stage.

Licensed
Header: "Jordan Lee, CPA". Certifications: "Certified Public Accountant, California Board of Accountancy, license no. available on request, active since 2021".
Passed all four sections, license pending
Certifications: "CPA exam: all four sections passed (2026); Texas license application in progress". Do not put CPA after your name yet.
Passed some sections
Certifications: "CPA candidate: FAR and AUD passed; REG scheduled November 2026, TCP discipline section in early 2027". Recruiters like seeing the schedule; it shows momentum.
Eligible, not yet sitting
Education: "B.S. Accounting, 150 semester hours completed (CPA exam eligible in Illinois)". Put nothing about the CPA in the header or certifications.
Not pursuing the CPA
Say nothing. Many industry accounting roles do not require it. If you hold a CMA (Certified Management Accountant, from IMA) or an EA (Enrolled Agent, from the IRS) list that instead.
Never write "CPA" after your name if the license is inactive, lapsed or from a state where you are not licensed to practice. Boards treat that as holding out, and employers do verify with the state board's online lookup.

Accountant resume summary examples (staff, senior, CPA, tax, entry level)

Three or four lines under the header. Title and years first, then what you own, then the systems, then one result. The examples below cover the searches people make most often.

Staff accountant (2–3 years)
Staff accountant with 3 years at a $60M distribution company handling AP (400 invoices a month), bank and credit card reconciliations, and journal entries for the month-end close in Sage Intacct. Passed FAR and AUD; sitting for REG in 2026. Cut the AP aging over 60 days from 14% to 4%.
Senior accountant
Senior accountant with 6 years in public and industry accounting, owning the close for a $180M manufacturer with two intercompany entities. Reduced the close from 9 to 5 business days and supported three audits with no adjustments. NetSuite, BlackLine and advanced Excel.
CPA (public accounting)
CPA with 5 years in a regional firm's audit practice, leading fieldwork on 10 to 12 engagements a year for manufacturers, construction companies and nonprofits ($5M to $120M revenue). Supervises two to three associates per engagement. CaseWare, IDEA and Excel.
Tax accountant
Tax accountant with 4 years preparing and reviewing 250+ returns a season (Forms 1040, 1120-S, 1065 and multi-state) in UltraTax CS for closely held businesses and their owners. Enrolled Agent since 2024. Resolved 30+ IRS and state notices with no penalties assessed to clients.
Entry level / new graduate
Accounting graduate (B.S., 150 hours, GPA 3.6) with a busy-season tax internship preparing 45 individual and small-business returns and a semester as a VITA volunteer preparer. Passed FAR in June 2026, AUD scheduled for October. Excel (pivot tables, XLOOKUP) and QuickBooks Online.
Career changer (bookkeeper to accountant)
Bookkeeper with 7 years running full-cycle books for 12 small businesses in QuickBooks Online, now completing a B.S. in Accounting (December 2026). Handles bank reconciliations, sales tax filings in 3 states and 1099 reporting. Seeking a staff accountant role with a path to the CPA.

Objective or summary? Use a summary in every case, including as a fresher or new graduate. The entry-level example above is a summary: it says what you have done, not what you hope for.

Build my accountant resume

How to write accountant experience on a resume

  1. 1Start each bullet with the task in accounting terms (prepare, reconcile, review, file, close), not with "responsible for".
  2. 2Add the size: how many reconciliations, entities, returns, invoices, or the dollar amount of the ledger, revenue or budget.
  3. 3Add the tool where it matters: the ERP, the tax software, the reconciliation tool.
  4. 4End with the result or quality signal: days cut from the close, error rate, audit adjustments, penalties avoided, money recovered.
  5. 5Check that a manager could tell your level from the bullet alone. If it could describe an intern or a controller equally, it needs a number.

Seven common accountant bullets, rewritten:

BeforeAfter
Responsible for month-end close.Closed the books for three entities by business day 5 each month, posting 120+ journal entries (accruals, prepaids, intercompany) in NetSuite.
Performed account reconciliations.Reconciled 30 balance sheet accounts monthly in BlackLine, including 6 bank accounts and inventory reserves, and cleared every variance over $2K within the close.
Prepared financial statements.Prepared the monthly income statement, balance sheet and cash flow package for the CFO, with variance commentary on any line 5% or $10K off budget.
Handled accounts payable.Processed 500 vendor invoices a month through Bill.com with three-way matching; found and recovered $42K in duplicate payments during a vendor clean-up.
Prepared tax returns.Prepared 90 business and 120 individual returns per season in Lacerte, including 15 multi-state S corporations, with a reviewer change rate under 5%.
Assisted with the annual audit.Owned the 65-item PBC list for the external audit, delivered every schedule by the requested date, and closed the audit with zero proposed adjustments two years running.
Managed fixed assets.Maintained a $24M fixed-asset register (about 800 assets) in Sage Intacct: capitalization decisions, monthly depreciation and the annual physical count across two sites.

Accountant resume skills: technical, software and the ones that get tested

Keep the skills section to 12 to 15 items and make it specific. "Accounting" is not a skill on an accountant's resume. Group them if you like: accounting, systems, then anything else.

Accounting and reporting skills:

  • Month-end and year-end close; journal entries, accruals, prepaids
  • Balance sheet reconciliations and variance analysis
  • US GAAP; name the standards you have applied (ASC 606 revenue, ASC 842 leases, ASC 350 intangibles)
  • Financial statement preparation and management reporting
  • Fixed assets, inventory and cost accounting (if industry)
  • Accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting
  • Federal and state tax compliance: Forms 1040, 1120, 1120-S, 1065, 990, sales and use tax
  • Audit support and internal controls (SOX 404 if you have worked at a public company)
  • Budgeting, forecasting and cash flow projections

Software (list the ones you have used, spelled as the vendor spells them):

  • ERP and general ledger: NetSuite, SAP S/4HANA, Oracle Fusion, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Sage Intacct, QuickBooks Online and Desktop, Xero
  • Close and reconciliation: BlackLine, FloQast
  • Tax: CCH Axcess, UltraTax CS, Lacerte, ProSeries, Drake, GoSystem Tax RS
  • Audit: CaseWare Working Papers, IDEA, TeamMate
  • AP, expense and payroll: Bill.com, Concur, Expensify, ADP, Paychex, Gusto
  • Sales tax: Avalara, Vertex
  • Excel: state the level honestly (pivot tables, XLOOKUP/INDEX-MATCH, Power Query, macros). Many employers give an Excel test.
  • Reporting: Power BI, Tableau, Google Sheets

Skills managers value but rarely see written well: hitting a fixed deadline every month, explaining a variance to someone who is not in finance, and writing a clear reconciliation note that an auditor can follow. Show those in your bullets rather than listing them.

Entry-level accountant resume (no experience, new graduate, internship)

Accounting is one of the few fields where a new graduate's resume has real content: credit hours toward the CPA, exam sections passed, a busy-season internship, and volunteer tax preparation all count as experience to a hiring manager. Here is what to include and how.

  • Education at the top, with the degree, graduation date, GPA if 3.3 or higher, and the credit hours if you have or will have 150 ("150 semester hours, CPA exam eligible").
  • CPA exam progress, even one section. "FAR passed, AUD scheduled" is one of the strongest lines an entry-level accounting resume can have.
  • Relevant coursework, briefly: Intermediate Accounting I and II, Cost Accounting, Auditing, Federal Income Tax, Accounting Information Systems.
  • Internships written like jobs: number of returns prepared, reconciliations completed, audit areas tested, hours worked in busy season.
  • VITA (the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program) or a campus tax clinic: certify at the Advanced level and list the number of returns.
  • Beta Alpha Psi membership or officer roles, accounting case competitions, and any bookkeeping for a family business or student organization treasurer role.
  • Excel skills tested by a certification if you have one (Microsoft Office Specialist: Excel Expert) or by a specific line ("built a 3-statement model in Excel for a class project").
Internship bullet (tax)
Prepared 45 individual and 12 S corporation returns in CCH Axcess during the January–April busy season, working 50-hour weeks, with a first-review change rate under 10%.
Internship bullet (audit)
Tested cash, accounts payable and fixed assets on 4 audit engagements for private companies, tying 200+ selections to source documents in CaseWare with no reperformance findings.
Internship bullet (industry)
Reconciled 8 bank and credit card accounts monthly in QuickBooks Online for a $15M services company and prepared 1099-NEC forms for 60 contractors.
Volunteer bullet (VITA)
IRS VITA volunteer, Advanced certification; prepared and quality-reviewed 70 federal and state returns for low-income taxpayers over one season.
Student organization bullet
Treasurer of a 120-member student association: managed a $28K annual budget, reconciled the bank account monthly and presented financials at each board meeting.
For an accounting internship resume, the same page works. Move Education and CPA eligibility to the top, list coursework, and put the treasurer role or part-time job under Experience. One page.

Accountant resume format and length

  • Length: one page up to about 10 years of experience. Two pages are normal for senior accountants, controllers and CPAs with 10+ years or long public accounting client lists. Never a third.
  • Order for experienced accountants: header (with CPA if licensed), summary, experience, skills, certifications, education. For entry level: header, summary, education, experience, skills.
  • Reverse chronological. Accounting managers want to see progression (staff, senior, manager) and tenure. Skills-based formats read as hiding something.
  • Layout: a clean single-column template such as cvplex corporate-navy. Conservative fonts, no photo, no graphics, no skill bars. Firms and large companies put resumes through applicant tracking systems that read text, not design.
  • Dates by month and year. Show a promotion within the same firm as two titles under one employer (as in the sample) so the ATS and the reader both see the growth.
  • Send a PDF unless the posting asks for Word. Name it Firstname-Lastname-CPA-Resume.pdf or Firstname-Lastname-Accountant-Resume.pdf.
  • Keywords to mirror from the posting when true for you: month-end close, general ledger, reconciliations, GAAP, financial statements, variance analysis, fixed assets, accruals, intercompany, audit, tax compliance, and the ERP by name.
  • UK and other countries: the document is a CV, and the qualifications are ACCA, ACA (ICAEW) or CIMA rather than the CPA. Leave the photo off in the UK as well.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a good accounting resume?

State your CPA status precisely in the header or certifications, write a 3-line summary with your years, the scope you own and one result, then give each job 3 to 5 bullets that each carry a size (entities, reconciliations, returns, dollars) or a result (days cut, zero audit adjustments). Name your ERP and Excel level. One page under 10 years, two after.

What skills should I put on an accountant resume?

Technical: month-end close, reconciliations, GAAP standards you have applied, financial statements, tax forms you prepare, audit support. Software: your ERP (NetSuite, SAP, QuickBooks, Sage Intacct), close tools (BlackLine, FloQast), tax software, and an honest Excel level. Match the posting's wording, because the ATS reads the skills section first.

How do I put CPA on my resume before passing the exam?

In the certifications or education section, not after your name. Write the exact stage: "CPA candidate: FAR and AUD passed, REG scheduled November 2026" or "150 semester hours completed, CPA exam eligible in Illinois". Only licensed CPAs put the letters after their name.

How do I make an accounting resume with no experience?

Lead with education, credit hours and any CPA exam sections passed. Then treat internships, VITA volunteer tax preparation, a student-organization treasurer role and relevant coursework as your experience, each with numbers (returns prepared, budget managed). Add your Excel and QuickBooks skills. Keep it to one page.

Should an accountant resume be one page or two?

One page for staff accountants and anyone under about 10 years. Two pages are fine for senior accountants, controllers and CPAs with long careers. If you go to two, the first page must still carry the summary, CPA status and your current role.

What is a good objective for an accountant resume with no experience?

Write a summary instead. "Accounting graduate (B.S., 150 hours) with a busy-season tax internship (45 returns) and FAR passed; seeking a staff accountant role" tells the manager what you can do. An objective that says you want to grow with a dynamic firm tells them nothing.

How is a senior accountant resume different from a staff accountant resume?

Ownership and review. A senior owns the close, reviews others' reconciliations, leads the audit PBC list and handles technical areas such as ASC 606 or ASC 842. Use verbs like own, review, lead and present, and give the number of entities, reconciliations and people reviewed.

Is an accountant CV different from an accountant resume?

The document is the same; "CV" is the UK term. The credentials differ: ACCA, ACA or CIMA in the UK, CPA in the US. Applying in the US, use "resume", one to two pages, no photo, and list your CPA state.
