Put your tightest routine tolerance on the page and name the operation it applies to. "±0.0002 in on jig grinding" is a skill level a tool room manager can price. "High precision work" is not.

What a tool room manager checks first

Toolmakers are expensive to hire wrong and hard to find, so the screen is specific.

  • What you build. Progressive dies, compound dies, injection molds, die cast dies, jigs and fixtures, gauges, prototype tooling. These are different trades that share a title, and a stamping shop and a mold shop want different people.
  • Tolerances and machines together. Saying you hold ±0.0002 in means little without the operation. Jig grinding, surface grinding, wire EDM and boring all imply different capability.
  • Whether you completed an apprenticeship, and where. A registered apprenticeship with a journeyworker certificate is the standard credential in this trade and it travels. Say the length, the sponsor and the year.
