Tipper Driver CV Examples & Writing Guide

A one-page CV for a driver with eight years hauling aggregates and asphalt. Name and employers are invented. Note the vehicle types in the header, and that each job says what was hauled, how many loads a day and how the driving record held up.

Your CV goes to a transport manager, a workshop foreman or the owner of a small haulage firm. They need a seat filled on Monday and they read for four things.

• Licence category and record. Category C covers a rigid 8-wheel tipper; you need C+E to pull an articulated tipper or bulk trailer. Say which you hold, that your DQC and medical are current, and that your licence is clean. Insurance drives this decision more than anything else.
• Which vehicles you have driven. 6-wheel and 8-wheel rigid tippers, articulated tippers, grab lorries, bulk walking-floor trailers, articulated dump trucks on site. Manual or automatic. Someone who has reversed an 8-wheeler to a paver in traffic is worth more than someone who has only run a quarry loop.
• Which work you came from. Surfacing, aggregate delivery, groundworks and muck-away, demolition, council gritting or landfill haulage. Each one has its own pace and hazards.
• Whether you make life easy or hard. Do you sheet, keep tickets straight, check your axle weights, grease the lorry, turn up at 5am in season, and get along with the surfacing gang? Say so with facts, not adjectives.

“Give me loads per day and no overloading offences and I know exactly what the driver can do. Reversing to a paver in traffic without holding the gang up is a skill, and drivers who can do it never have to look for work in the spring.”

Every tipper driver hauls material. The bullets that get read give the material, the vehicle, the volume and how the work held up.

Two or three lines: licence category, years, the vehicles and the material, loads per shift, one record number. A career objective works if you are new to tipper work or have just passed your test.

Ten to fourteen skills, weighted towards the work in the advert. A surfacing contractor and a quarry read two different lists.

• Vehicles and trailers: 6-wheel and 8-wheel rigid tippers, articulated tippers, bulk tipper trailers, grab lorries, articulated dump trucks, manual and automatic gearboxes.
• Materials: hot asphalt, aggregates and Type 1 sub-base, sand, planings, topsoil and spoil, demolition waste, armour stone, rock salt for winter work.
• Site skills: reversing to a paver, spreading from the tailgate, tipping on a slope, working under a loader or excavator, banksman and hand signals, sheeting, fitting snow chains.
• Legal and paperwork: axle weights and plated weight limits, weighbridge tickets and load counts, drivers' hours and digital tachograph records, daily walk-round check and defect reports.
• Maintenance you do yourself: greasing, fluid and tyre checks, tipping gear and hydraulic inspection, sheet motor, air tank drain, minor roadside fixes.
• The things this employer actually screens for: attendance in season, working long summer days and being available for gritting call-out in winter, and keeping the lorry clean and legal.

There is no separate tipper driver certificate. What matters is the licence category, the Driver CPC, the medical and the site training the job requires.

• Category C (Class 2) for a rigid tipper over 7.5 tonnes; C+E if you pull an articulated tipper or bulk trailer. Make sure your CV says which, because a category C driver cannot take an artic job.
• A current Driver CPC (DQC), a digital tachograph card and a Group 2 medical. Put the DQC expiry date on the CV so the recruiter does not have to ask.
• Quarry safety training if you work in or deliver to quarries and sand and gravel pits. Operators run their own inductions and refreshers, so say which sites you are inducted on.
• A CSCS card is common on commercial and public projects, and recognised traffic management or road works safety training helps on road work.
• Some employers add their own tests: a driving assessment in their lorry, a pre-employment drug and alcohol test, and security vetting for airport, port or Ministry of Defence site access.

Tipper work is one of the more approachable HGV jobs to start in, because the runs are local and the vehicles are simpler than a fuel tanker. Employers will train you on the lorry; they will not train you to turn up at 5am in July.

1. 1Header: licence category and the date you passed, Driver CPC, a clean licence, and availability for early starts, long season days and winter gritting call-out.
2. 2Two-line career objective naming the tipper job and the closest experience you have: construction labouring, plant operation, farm work, landscaping, military driving.
3. 3List your HGV training provider and the Driver CPC initial qualification, plus any extra licence categories.
4. 4Work history that proves you can handle a construction day: outdoor jobs, early starts, months without a missed shift, working around heavy plant, following a foreman's directions.
5. 5Add site training you already hold: CSCS card, traffic management awareness, quarry induction, first aid. These cost the employer money, so having them makes you cheaper to hire.

• One page. Many of these employers are small firms where the owner reads the CV in the cab or the workshop office.
• Order: name, credentials line, short personal statement, driving jobs newest first, skills, qualifications, education. Do not leave employment gaps unexplained; the employer and their insurer will check your history anyway.
• Plain single column, standard font. UK conventions: no photo, no date of birth. Larger contractors use online application systems; small ones take a printed copy at the yard.
• Text-based PDF: Firstname-Lastname-Tipper-Driver.pdf. Bring printed copies if you apply in person, which is still common in this trade.
• Mirror the advert: "tipper", "8-wheeler", "6-wheeler", "artic tipper", "Class 2" or "Class 1", "aggregates", "asphalt", "tarmac", "muck away", "grab", "walk-round check", "Driver CPC", "clean licence", "CSCS", "seasonal", "gritting".
• In the US this job is advertised as a dump truck driver and asks for a CDL Class A or B; if your experience comes from there, describe it in UK terms, mention the US wording once and say which UK licence category you now hold.
