Dump Truck (Tipper) Driver Resume Examples & Guide

A one-page resume for a driver with eight years hauling aggregate and asphalt. Name and companies are invented. Note the truck types in the header, and that each job says what was hauled, how many loads a day and how the driving record held up.

Your resume goes to a dispatcher, a shop foreman or the owner of a small trucking outfit. They need a seat filled on Monday and they read for four things.

• License class and record. Class B covers a straight dump truck; you need Class A to pull an end dump, transfer or belly dump trailer. Say which you hold, that your medical card is current, and that your MVR is clean. Insurance drives this decision more than anything else.
• Which trucks you have run. Tandem, tri-axle, quad, super dump, transfer, end dump, belly dump, side dump, articulated haul truck. Manual or automatic. Someone who has backed a tri-axle to a paver in traffic is worth more than someone who has only run a quarry loop.
• Which work you came from. Asphalt paving, aggregate delivery, excavation and grading, demolition, municipal snow work or landfill hauling. Each one has its own pace and hazards.
• Whether you make life easy or hard. Do you tarp, keep tickets straight, check your axle weights, grease the truck, show up at 5 a.m. in season, and get along with the paving crew? Say so with facts, not adjectives.

“Give me loads per day and no overweight tickets and I know exactly what the driver can do. Backing to a paver in traffic without holding the crew up is a skill, and drivers who can do it never have to look for work in the spring.”

Every dump truck driver hauls material. The bullets that get read give the material, the truck, the volume and how the work held up.

Two or three lines: CDL class, years, the trucks and the material, loads per shift, one record number. An objective works if you are new to dump work or just licensed.

Ten to fourteen skills, weighted toward the work in the posting. A paving contractor and a quarry read two different lists.

• Trucks and trailers: tandem, tri-axle, quad, super dump, transfer, end dump, belly dump, side dump, articulated haul truck, manual and automatic transmissions.
• Materials: hot mix asphalt, aggregate and base rock, sand, millings, topsoil and spoil, demolition debris, riprap, salt and sand for winter work.
• Site skills: backing to a paver, tailgate spreading and windrowing, dumping on a slope, working under a loader or excavator, spotter and hand signals, tarping, chaining up.
• Legal and paperwork: axle weights and bridge law limits, scale tickets and load counts, hours of service and ELD if your carrier runs them, pre-trip and post-trip inspection reports.
• Maintenance you do yourself: greasing, fluid and tire checks, hoist and hydraulic inspection, tarp motor, air system drain, minor roadside fixes.
• The things this employer actually screens for: attendance in season, working long summer days and being available for snow call-out in winter, and keeping the truck clean and legal.

There is no separate dump truck certification. What matters is the license class, the medical card and the site training the job requires.

• CDL Class B for a straight dump truck over 26,001 pounds; CDL Class A if you pull an end dump, transfer or belly dump trailer. Make sure your resume says which, because a Class B driver cannot take a trailer job.
• No air brake restriction on the license, and a current DOT Medical Examiner's Certificate. Put the expiry date on the resume so the recruiter does not have to ask.
• MSHA Part 46 training if you work in or deliver to quarries, sand and gravel pits. New miner training plus the annual refresher, and it transfers between sites.
• OSHA 10-Hour Construction is common on commercial and public projects, and a state or ATSSA flagger card helps on road work.
• Some employers add their own tests: a road test in their truck, a pre-employment drug screen under DOT rules, and a background check for airport, port or military site access.

Dump work is one of the more approachable CDL jobs to start in, because the runs are local and the trucks are simpler than a fuel tanker. Employers will train you on the truck; they will not train you to show up at 5 a.m. in July.

4. 4Work history that proves you can handle a construction day: outdoor jobs, early starts, months without a missed shift, working around heavy equipment, following a foreman's directions.
5. 5Add site training you already hold: OSHA 10, flagger, MSHA Part 46, first aid. These cost the employer money, so having them makes you cheaper to hire.

• One page. Many of these employers are small outfits where the owner reads the resume in the truck or the shop office.
• Order: name, credentials line, short summary, driving jobs newest first, skills, certifications, education. Do not leave employment gaps unexplained; the carrier has to verify your history anyway.
• Plain single column, standard font, no photo, no date of birth. Larger contractors use Paycom, iCIMS or Workday; small ones take a printed copy at the shop.
• Text-based PDF: Firstname-Lastname-Dump-Truck-Driver.pdf. Bring printed copies if you apply in person, which is still common in this trade.
• Mirror the posting: "dump truck", "tri-axle", "end dump", "transfer", "CDL-A" or "CDL-B", "aggregate", "asphalt", "hot mix", "haul", "pre-trip inspection", "DOT medical card", "clean MVR", "MSHA", "seasonal", "snow removal".
• In the UK and Ireland this job is a tipper truck driver or grab lorry driver, and employers ask for an HGV Class 2 license and a CPC card. The advice here is written for US postings.
