Shop Assistant CV Examples & Writing Guide

A shop assistant CV (advertised as sales assistant or retail assistant in most UK job adverts) gets an interview when the store manager can see the kind of shop you worked in, your till and stock experience, a few numbers (transactions a shift, add-on sales, loyalty sign-ups, shrinkage) and your availability. Below is a full example plus a no-experience version.

Shop assistant CV example (senior sales assistant, homeware store)

This CV is for an experienced shop assistant who is now a keyholder at a homeware store. UK adverts call this job "sales assistant", "retail assistant" or "shop assistant"; in the US it is a "sales associate". The name is made up. Look at how every job has a store type, a store size and at least one number a manager can check.

Put your availability in the personal statement. Store managers hire for the shifts they cannot fill. "Available evenings, weekends and bank holidays" answers the first question they would ask on the phone.

What a store manager checks first on a sales assistant CV

A store manager hiring a shop assistant is usually reading CVs between customers. They give each one about twenty seconds. Four things decide whether yours gets a call.

  • Store type and pace. Supermarket, out-of-town retail park, specialist fashion, electronics and luxury are different jobs. "Sales assistant at a 12,000 sq ft homeware store doing £2.6m a year" tells the manager what pace you are used to.
  • Till and cash. Which EPOS you used, how many transactions a shift, and whether your till balanced. A line like "zero discrepancies over £5 in 3 years" is worth more than any adjective.
  • Selling and service numbers. Units per transaction, average sale, add-on rate, loyalty sign-ups, credit applications, mystery shop scores, online reviews that named you. Any of these proves you do more than stand at the till.
  • Availability and staying power. How long you stayed, whether you can work evenings, weekends and bank holidays, and whether you were trusted with keys or opening and closing.

“The first thing I look for is whether they have closed a store and counted a till. The second is any number about selling. If both are there, I stop reading and call them, because most retail CVs have neither.”

Shop assistant personal statement and career objective examples

Use a personal statement once you have worked in any shop. Use a career objective for your first retail job, and make it about what you can do (till, stock, customer service, availability) rather than what you want. Keep either to three lines.

Experienced sales assistant (personal statement)
Retail sales assistant with 7 years in homeware, outdoor and grocery. Keyholder who opens and closes a £2.6m store, processes 120 to 180 transactions a shift and runs the shop floor on manager-off days. Top 3 of 14 for add-on sales and loyalty sign-ups. Available evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
Specialist or fashion retail (personal statement)
Sales assistant with 4 years in womenswear at a shopping centre store doing £1.4m a year. Styles 30 to 40 customers a day, averages £62 per transaction against a store average of £48, and signs up 40+ customers a quarter to the loyalty app. Handles fitting rooms, recovery and floor moves. Comfortable with busy Saturdays and Christmas trading hours.
Supermarket (personal statement)
Customer assistant with 3 years at a 40,000 sq ft supermarket. Serves 200+ customers a shift, handles National Lottery, PayPoint and Challenge 25 sales, and trains new colleagues on the NCR tills. Till within £2 on 98% of shifts. Level 2 Food Hygiene certificate.
Career change into retail (career objective)
Former restaurant waitress (5 years, 30 to 50 covers a night) moving into retail. Used to a fast till, upselling and handling complaints face to face. Comfortable on my feet for a full shift and open to any rota. Seeking a sales assistant role where service and pace matter.
No experience (career objective)
School leaver (sixth form, June 2026) with two years volunteering on the counter of a charity shop: sorted donations, priced items and handled cash sales. Quick with a till, polite with customers and available weekday afternoons, weekends and bank holidays. Seeking a first sales assistant job.

Build my shop assistant CV

Shop assistant duties on a CV: weak to strong

Most retail CVs list duties from the job advert: "assisted customers, operated till, stocked shelves". Every applicant can say that. Add the shop, the volume and the result, and the same duty becomes evidence.

Weak (duty only)Strong (store, volume, result)
Operated the till.Processed 120 to 180 transactions a shift on a Lightspeed EPOS, including returns, exchanges and finance applications; no till discrepancies over £5 in 3 years.
Provided excellent customer service.Fitted boots and rucksacks for 40 to 60 customers a day and scored 96% on the 2022 mystery shop, above the chain average of 88%.
Upsold products.Raised personal add-on rate on footwear (socks, insoles, care products) to 38%, the highest on a 22-person team in 2022.
Signed customers up for the loyalty scheme.Signed up 35 to 50 customers a month to the loyalty scheme, top 3 of 14 sales assistants every quarter since 2023.
Stocked shelves and kept the store tidy.Got 2 to 3 pallets of deliveries a week onto the shop floor within 24 hours and changed 6 to 8 planogram sections a month for seasonal changes.
Opened and closed the store.Opened and closed 3 to 4 days a week as keyholder: counted 4 tills, prepared banking of £3,000 to £7,000, set the alarm and filed the closing report.
Handled online orders.Picked and packed 25 to 40 click-and-collect and ship-from-store orders a day with a 99% on-time rate.
Where do the numbers come from? Your store's daily sales report, the EPOS end-of-day summary, the loyalty leaderboard, and mystery shop or customer survey results your manager shares. Ask before you leave a job; managers are usually happy to give you your own figures.

Sales assistant CV skills: what store managers actually want

List 10 to 14 skills, concrete enough that a manager could test them on a trial shift. Split them into till and money, selling and service, stock and shop floor, and the personal qualities that matter in a shop.

  • Till and money: the EPOS systems you know (Square, Lightspeed, Shopify POS, NCR, Toshiba, Oracle Xstore), cash handling and banking, returns and exchanges, gift cards, interest-free credit applications, and National Lottery, PayPoint and Challenge 25 for supermarkets and convenience stores.
  • Selling and service: greeting and needs questions, suggestive and add-on selling, loyalty and store card sign-ups, product knowledge for your category, handling complaints, phone and click-and-collect orders.
  • Stock and shop floor: taking deliveries, stockroom organisation, stock counts and scanning with handheld devices, planogram changes, visual merchandising, price changes and ticketing, loss prevention awareness.
  • Personal qualities that count here: reliability (say it with attendance), staying polite through a rush, working a closing shift alone, learning a new product range fast, and being flexible on the rota.
  • Extras worth a line: a second language, Level 2 Food Hygiene certificate (supermarkets and cafes), pallet truck or forklift (large stores and garden centres), keyholder or supervisor experience.

Leave out "communication skills" and "team player" as bare words. Put them in a bullet point instead: "trained 4 new starters on the till" says both.

Sales assistant CV with no experience

Retail is one of the most common first jobs in the UK, and store managers hire people with no experience every week. They are looking for three things: you will turn up for your shifts, you can be polite to strangers for eight hours, and you can learn a till. Your CV should prove those three things with whatever you have.

  1. 1Write a two-line career objective with your availability first. "Available weekday afternoons, all day Saturday and Sunday, and bank holidays" is the line the manager needs. Large shops in England and Wales can open for only six hours on a Sunday, so Sunday shifts are shorter; say if you can do them.
  2. 2Add a Skills section: any till or payment app you have used (school shop, fundraiser, a card reader at a market), basic maths and counting change, phone manners, a second language, lifting and standing for a shift.
  3. 3Turn school, volunteer and family experience into retail bullet points: babysitting (reliability, 3 years with the same family), school fundraisers (sold £1,500 of raffle tickets), charity shop volunteering (counter, cash box), sport (training five days a week).
  4. 4Add a line for any certificate you can earn in a day or two: Level 2 Food Hygiene for supermarkets or cafes, a free online customer service course.
  5. 5Keep it to one page, no photo and no date of birth, and hand your CV in personally if the shop accepts walk-ins. Managers still remember faces.
Volunteer work as a retail bullet point
Counter volunteer, charity shop (2024 to 2026, 6 hours a week): priced and displayed donations, ran the till and card reader for 30 to 50 sales a shift, and helped customers find sizes.
School activity as a retail bullet point
Treasurer, school robotics club (2025 to 2026): ran refreshment sales at 8 home events, handled £250 to £500 in cash per event and reconciled it with the staff adviser the same evening.

Format, length and keywords for a shop assistant CV

Large chains route applications through a tracking system (Workday, Oracle Taleo, SuccessFactors and Paradox are common in retail) before the store manager sees them. Small independent shops read paper. Write for both.

  • Length: one page, always. Two pages suggest you have not worked in a shop.
  • Order: header, personal statement or career objective with availability, experience, skills, education. Put availability high.
  • One column, standard font, dates on the right, no photo, no date of birth. UK adverts use "sales assistant", "retail assistant", "shop assistant" and "customer assistant" (supermarkets) for much the same job; use the advert's wording.
  • Keywords to mirror from the advert: "EPOS" or "till", "cash handling", "customer service", "merchandising", "replenishment", "loss prevention", "loyalty scheme", "product knowledge", the store category ("fashion", "grocery", "electronics"), and the availability words ("weekends", "bank holidays", "flexible hours").
  • Use the same job title as the advert in your header, and write your old title in the experience entry. If you were a "sales associate" abroad, write "Sales Assistant (Sales Associate)".
  • Save as PDF unless the portal asks for Word: Kayla-Brennan-Sales-Assistant-CV.pdf.

Run the file through the cvplex ATS checker with the advert pasted in. It shows which of the advert's words you left out and whether your header was read cleanly.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a shop assistant CV?

Write a three-line personal statement with the shop type, your years, one selling number and your availability. Then give each shop job a size and volume (sales a year, transactions a shift) and 3 to 5 bullet points with results: add-on rate, loyalty sign-ups, till accuracy, deliveries processed. Add a skills list naming your EPOS systems. Keep it to one page.

What skills should I put on a sales assistant CV?

EPOS systems by name, cash handling and till reconciliation, returns and exchanges, suggestive selling, loyalty sign-ups, product knowledge for your category, deliveries and replenishment, planogram changes, stock counts, complaint handling, and Challenge 25 if you sold age-restricted products. Add availability and a second language if you have one. Skip bare words like "team player".

How do I write a sales assistant CV with no experience?

Lead with a career objective that states your availability, then a skills list (till or payment apps, counting change, phone manners, a second language). Turn volunteer, school and family experience into bullet points with numbers: cash handled at a fundraiser, hours a week on a charity shop counter, years of reliable babysitting. One page, and hand it in personally if you can.

Should a shop assistant CV have a career objective or a personal statement?

A personal statement if you have worked in a shop, even part-time: shop type, years, a selling or accuracy number, availability. A career objective only for a first retail job, kept to two lines about availability and what you can already do.

Is a shop assistant the same as a sales assistant or retail assistant?

In most UK adverts, yes. "Sales assistant" and "retail assistant" are the most common titles, supermarkets often say "customer assistant" or "colleague", and US employers say "sales associate". Use the advert's title in your header and mention your old title once in the experience entry so both terms appear.

How long should a sales assistant CV be?

One page. Store managers read fast and want shop type, till experience, one or two numbers and your availability. Even a keyholder or supervisor with ten years in retail fits on one page.

How do I describe shop assistant duties on a CV?

Turn each duty into a bullet point with a number. Not "operated the till" but "processed 120 to 180 transactions a shift with no till discrepancies over £5". Not "stocked shelves" but "got 2 to 3 pallets of deliveries a week onto the shop floor within 24 hours". Three to five bullet points per job is enough.
