School Bus Driver Resume Examples & Writing Guide

This is a resume for a district driver with ten years in student transportation, including special needs routes. The name and district are made up. Notice that the license, endorsements and medical card sit in the top four lines, because that is the first thing a transportation director checks.

Districts are short of drivers almost everywhere, so a lot of applications get read fast by one person who also runs the shop and the route board. Four things decide whether you get a call.

• License and endorsements. CDL Class B is the usual minimum, with the Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements and no air brake restriction. If you are still in training, say exactly where you are in the process.
• Driving and criminal record. Districts pull your motor vehicle record and run fingerprint and child protection background checks. State the number of accident-free and violation-free years in plain words; do not make the reader guess.
• Whether you can handle children. Anyone can be taught the bus. Managing 60 students while watching a crossing is the part that fails new drivers. Write about ridership numbers, referrals, de-escalation and how you work with a bus aide.
• Availability. Routes are split shifts, roughly 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., with field trips and athletics on top. Say clearly if you can do midday runs, sports trips or summer school.

“I can teach anyone to drive the bus. What I cannot teach in three weeks is staying calm when there is a fight in row six and a car is passing your stop arm. Tell me on the resume how many students you carried and how you handled behavior, not just that you were safe.”

Put a licenses and certifications block near the top, above education. Every item needs the issuing state or body and an expiry or renewal year. Requirements vary from state to state, so check your state's school bus driver rules before you write anything you are not sure of.

• CDL Class B (or Class A if you hold one) with the Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements. Note if you have no air brake restriction, because a restricted license cannot drive most school buses.
• DOT medical examiner's certificate from a provider on the FMCSA National Registry. Give the expiry year.
• Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT). Since February 2022 new CDL applicants and drivers adding the P or S endorsement have to complete ELDT with a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. Name the school and year.
• State school bus driver safety course and any renewal cycle your state runs.
• Background clearances: fingerprint-based criminal history check and the child abuse and neglect registry check your state uses. Writing "cleared and current" is enough; never put your license or Social Security number on the resume.
• FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse registration and a clean query result.
• Helpful extras: First Aid, CPR and AED; wheelchair securement and passenger assistance; behind-the-wheel trainer or evaluator status; a defensive driving course.

Three or four lines at the top. Put the license and endorsements, the years driving, the size of your route and your safety record. Use an objective only if you have no bus experience yet.

The weakest school bus resumes say "transported students safely to and from school". That is the definition of the job. Put the route in numbers instead: students, stops, miles, years without an incident.

Split your skills so the driving and the child-handling sides are both visible. Districts scan for both, and most applicants only write the first.

• Driving and equipment: pre-trip and post-trip inspection, air brake checks, conventional and transit-style buses, 40 to 84 passenger capacity, mirror adjustment and blind spot checks, backing with a spotter, snow and ice driving, chains.
• Safety procedures: railroad crossing stops, 8-way lights and stop arm use, loading and unloading danger zone, evacuation drills, fire extinguisher and first aid kit checks, post-trip child check systems.
• Student management: age-appropriate seating plans, calm de-escalation, referral paperwork, working with a bus aide, bullying reporting, confidentiality around IEP and health information.
• Special needs transport: wheelchair lift operation, 4-point tie-downs and occupant restraints, car seats and safety vests, individual transportation plans, students with autism or medical devices.
• Systems and paperwork: route sheets, ridership counts, Zonar or similar electronic inspection, GPS and routing software, two-way radio, mileage and fuel logs, incident reports.
• Reliability: split shift availability, field trips and athletics, summer school routes, sub coverage, punctuality record.

Leave off filler like "good communication skills". Replace it with the real version: "radios dispatch on road conditions and calls parents back the same day about a missed stop".

Most districts now pay for your CDL training because they cannot fill routes. That means a resume with no bus hours is normal. What you have to show is a clean record, comfort with kids and availability.

1. 1Say where you are with the license in the first two lines: "Enrolled in district-paid CDL Class B training with P and S endorsements, road test scheduled March 2026", or "CDL permit obtained, ELDT complete".
2. 2Lead with the driving record. "Clean driving record since 2014, no accidents or violations" is the single strongest line an applicant with no bus hours can write.
3. 3Turn any job with children into route-relevant experience: childcare, teacher's aide, camp counselor, youth coaching, cafeteria or crossing guard work, church youth group, or raising kids in a foster or care role.
4. 4State availability plainly: mornings, afternoons, midday runs, field trips, summer school. Districts hire on availability more than on polish.
5. 5One page. No photo, no date of birth. Bring your driving record printout to the interview.

One page. Districts and contractors run applications through an applicant tracking system or through a state school employment portal, so keep it plain: one column, standard headings, no photo, no tables, no graphics. Save as PDF unless the portal asks for Word.

• Give month and year for every job and explain any gap. Summers off between school years are normal, so write "school year contract, summers off" rather than leaving it blank.
• Do not put your CDL number, license number, Social Security number or date of birth on the resume.
