Sales Manager Resume Examples & Writing Guide

A sales manager resume is judged on four numbers: team size, quota carried, attainment against that quota, and what you did to the pipeline (win rate, deal size, ramp time). Everything else is context. Below is a full sample plus summaries, achievement bullets, skills and advice on titles and confidential figures.

This person is invented and the companies are not real, but the shape is right. Notice that quota, attainment and team size appear in the first line of every job, before any description of what the role involved.

Put quota, attainment and team size in the first bullet of every management job. A hiring VP should be able to read your whole track record from the first line of each role.

What a VP of sales checks in the first 20 seconds

Sales leadership hiring is one of the few areas where the resume is genuinely scored on numbers. The reader is a VP or a founder who has missed a number recently and wants to believe you can fix it.

  • Quota carried and attainment, by year. Two or three years of percentages tells them almost everything. One good year reads as luck.
  • Team size and shape. How many reps, what kind (AE, SDR, field, inside, channel), and whether you hired them or inherited them.
  • Deal size and sales cycle. A manager of $15K transactional deals and a manager of $500K enterprise deals are not interchangeable, and the mismatch is the most common reason for a rejection.
  • Market and buyer. Who you sold to (SMB, mid-market, enterprise, public sector) and in what industry. Sales skill transfers; buyer knowledge transfers less.
  • What you changed. Win rate, ramp time, forecast accuracy, pipeline coverage, attrition. This is what separates a manager from a senior rep with a title.
  • Retention. How many of your hires are still there. Sales leaders talk to each other and this comes up in reference calls anyway.

Give me three years of quota and attainment in the first two lines and I will read the rest. If a sales manager cannot put a number next to their own performance, that tells me what their forecast calls were like.

Sales manager resume summary and objective examples

Three or four lines. Team size and quota in the first, attainment in the second, one thing you changed in the third. Skip objectives unless you are moving into management for the first time.

Sales manager achievement bullets you can copy

The most common mistake on a sales management resume is describing the job instead of the result. "Managed a team of sales representatives" is the job. Everyone applying managed a team.

How to show your numbers when the real ones are confidential

Most sales managers work somewhere that treats revenue as confidential, and quite a few have signed something about it. That is not a reason to write a resume with no numbers, because a sales resume without numbers is not competitive. Use relative figures instead of absolute ones.

  • Percentages of quota are almost always safe. "108% of team quota" reveals nothing about company revenue.
  • Ratios and multiples work: "grew pipeline coverage from 2.1x to 3.4x", "average deal size up 33%", "win rate from 22% to 31%".
  • Rankings are safe: "top 3 of 22 reps", "highest-performing region of five".
  • Round or band the absolute numbers: "a quota in the low eight figures", "deals in the $250K to $1M range".
  • Team and time numbers are never confidential: headcount, hires, ramp time, retention, tenure.
  • If a specific figure is genuinely sensitive, write the shape of it and offer detail in the interview. Nobody has been rejected for saying "exact figures available under NDA".
  • Never publish a customer's name or contract value if your agreement forbids it. Use "a national logistics customer" instead.
Whatever you write, be ready to defend it in a first interview. Attainment numbers get checked in reference calls in this field more than in any other, and a number you cannot explain does more damage than no number at all.

Skills, stack and the credentials that carry weight

Lead with the leadership skills, not the selling skills. Anyone reading a sales manager resume assumes you can sell; they are working out whether you can build a team that sells.

  • Quota setting, territory design and account segmentation
  • Pipeline management, forecasting and inspection cadence
  • Hiring, onboarding, ramp plans and performance management
  • Call coaching, deal reviews and win-loss analysis
  • Negotiation, pricing and discount approval authority
  • Compensation plan input and quota fairness
  • Quarterly business reviews and executive reporting
  • Channel, partner and distributor management

Your stack, by product name. This is what keyword filters match and what a VP uses to judge how modern your operation was.

  • CRM: Salesforce, HubSpot, Microsoft Dynamics, Pipedrive
  • Engagement and sequencing: Outreach, Salesloft, Apollo
  • Call recording and coaching: Gong, Chorus
  • Data and prospecting: ZoomInfo, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, Clay
  • Forecasting and analytics: Clari, Salesforce dashboards, Excel or Sheets modeling
  • Quoting and contracts: CPQ tools, DocuSign

Sales has no license, so credentials matter less here than in most fields. These are the ones worth a line: a Salesforce Administrator certification if you actually run the instance, a named methodology you have been trained in and can run (MEDDIC, Challenger, Sandler, SPIN, Command of the Message), a HubSpot certification if that is your CRM, and any formal management training your employer put you through. A bachelor's degree is expected in most corporate sales roles and rarely discussed after that; if you do not have one, lead so hard with attainment numbers that it stops being the question.

Sales manager, regional, director or head of sales: getting the level right

Titles in sales are inflated in some companies and deflated in others, so recruiters read the scope rather than the title. Say your scope plainly and the title takes care of itself.

Title on the postingWhat the reader assumes about scope
Sales managerFirst-line manager of 4 to 12 reps, carrying a team quota, hiring and coaching, reporting to a director or VP.
Regional or area sales managerSame first-line role with a geography attached, usually field-based with travel and often distributor or channel accounts.
Sales directorManages managers or a large single team, owns a segment number, involved in quota and comp design, reports to VP or CEO.
Head of salesOwns the whole sales number for the company, usually at a smaller business, often building the function rather than running one.
Player-coach or team leadCarries a personal quota while coaching others. Valuable, but say so, because claiming pure management here is easily caught.

Two practical rules. First, if your company gave you a bigger title than the scope justifies, keep the title and let the numbers describe the scope, so nothing looks inflated in a reference call. Second, if you are applying up a level, put the biggest scope you have genuinely handled in the summary: managers you have coached, the largest quota you have owned, whether you have hired and fired.

Format, length and the words the posting uses

  • Two pages is acceptable and normal for a sales manager with 10 or more years. One page if you have under 6 years or are applying to a startup.
  • Reverse chronological. Sales leaders read for progression: rep, senior rep, manager, more people, bigger number.
  • A three or four line summary at the top, then experience. Skip a skills-first format; it reads as hiding a weak track record.
  • Numbers in the first bullet of every job. Attainment, quota, team size.
  • No photo, no date of birth on a US resume. In sales, where relationships matter, people still try this; it works against you.
  • One column, plain PDF. Corporate sales roles attract hundreds of applicants and the applicant tracking system is the first reader.
  • Include a short "Selected wins" band under the summary if your best deals are the strongest thing you have.

Mirror the posting's language. US listings use "quota attainment", "pipeline", "forecast accuracy", "new logo", "net revenue retention", "ARR" or "ACV", "territory", "channel", "MEDDIC" and the CRM by name. Match the segment word they use (SMB, mid-market, enterprise) if it is true of you, because that is a hard filter for most sales recruiters. In the UK and Ireland the same document is a sales manager CV, often two pages with a personal profile; for US applications keep the summary short and lead with attainment.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a sales manager resume?

Lead with a four-line summary containing team size, quota and attainment. Then start every management job with the same three facts, followed by three to five bullets about what you changed: win rate, ramp time, forecast accuracy, deal size, retention. Two pages is fine above ten years.

What should a sales manager put on a resume?

Quota carried and attainment by year, team size and composition, average deal size and sales cycle, the market and buyer you sold to, what you improved with before and after figures, and your stack by product name. Leadership skills go before selling skills.

What are good bullet points for a sales manager resume?

Ones that pair an action with a measured outcome. "Raised team win rate from 22% to 31% by requiring a discovery call before any demo." "Cut new-hire ramp from 7 months to 4.5." "Hired 6 AEs in 18 months, 5 still in seat." Avoid anything starting with "responsible for".

What is a good summary for a sales manager resume?

Try: "Sales manager with 8 years in leadership, currently leading 9 AEs and 2 SDRs against a $12.4M quota. Delivered 108% and 103% in the last two fiscal years. Raised win rate from 22% to 31% and cut ramp from 7 months to 4.5." Scope, attainment, improvement.

What is a good objective for a sales manager resume?

Use one only when moving into management for the first time. Base it on what you already do: personal quota and attainment, reps you coach, the pipeline call you run. Then name the responsibility you want, such as hiring and forecast ownership. Experienced managers should use a summary instead.

Can I put revenue figures on my resume if they are confidential?

Use relative numbers instead of absolute ones. Percentage of quota, win rate, ratios, rankings and growth percentages reveal nothing about company revenue and carry the same weight. Band the sensitive ones ("deals in the $250K to $1M range") and offer detail in the interview if asked.

How is a sales director resume different from a sales manager resume?

A director resume shows managers managed, not just reps, plus involvement in quota setting, compensation design and segment strategy. If you are applying up a level, put your largest genuine scope in the summary and be specific about whether you managed managers, since that is the line recruiters check first.

How long should a sales manager resume be?

Two pages once you have ten or more years or several management roles. One page under six years. Keep older sales rep jobs to one line each with title, employer, dates and attainment, and spend the space on your last two leadership roles.
