Psychologist CV Examples & Writing Guide
A psychologist CV gets an interview when it shows your HCPC registration and protected title on the first line, the client groups and therapies you work with (by name: CBT, DBT, ACT), your assessment competence (WAIS, WISC, ADOS), your caseload and outcome numbers, and your record-keeping. Below is a full sample, plus personal statements, bullets, skills and a version for psychology graduates.
Psychologist CV example
This sample is for an HCPC-registered clinical psychologist eight years after qualifying, working in an NHS adult psychological therapies service after three years in a community mental health team. The name, employers and universities are made up, and earlier assistant psychologist posts are cut to save space. Keep the structure and replace the registration, caseload, assessments and outcomes with yours.

Psychologist CV, academic CV or application form: which do you need?
Psychologists in the UK come across three formats, and sending the wrong one costs interviews. Most NHS posts are applied for through an online application form (NHS Jobs or Trac) with a supporting statement scored against the person specification. Private hospitals, independent practice, charities and corporate employers ask for a two-page CV. Academic and research posts want the full academic CV: every publication, presentation, grant, teaching role, placement and supervisor. Here is how to choose.
- Use a full academic CV for: lecturer and research posts, research fellowships, honorary contracts with universities and any advert that asks for a full publication list. Length is whatever it takes; 4 to 10 pages is normal.
- Use a two-page CV for: private hospitals, independent and group practices, charities, local authority and school services, occupational and corporate roles, and online therapy providers. Two pages for a qualified psychologist; one page for an assistant psychologist or graduate.
- For NHS posts the application form and supporting statement do the work. Keep your CV beside you to copy from, answer each point of the person specification in the statement, and attach a CV only if the advert invites one. Shortlisters will not search a 9-page CV for your caseload.
- Applying to the US? There "CV" means the long academic record and the short document is called a resume, and clinics expect a state licence rather than HCPC registration. Australia, Ireland and other countries have their own registration bodies; follow each country's conventions on length and personal details.
“Half the psychologist applications arrive as an 8-page academic CV for a clinic job. The first page shows whether the registration is current, what populations they treat and how many clients they can carry; if that requires a hunt, the application goes to the maybe pile.”
What a lead psychologist or service manager checks first
- HCPC registration. Registered under a protected title, in the final months of a doctorate awaiting registration, or not yet in training (assistant psychologist). Each is a different job and a different Agenda for Change band; say which you are in the header.
- Client groups and therapies, by name. "Adults with anxiety and PTSD; CBT, ACT, prolonged exposure" tells the service you can fill a specific gap. "Diverse client groups, evidence-based practice" tells them nothing.
- Assessment competence. Which batteries you administer and interpret (WAIS, WISC, ADOS, PAI, neuropsychological screens) and how many reports a year. Assessment waiting lists are long and assessment skills are scarce.
- Activity and outcomes. Caseload, contacts per week, DNA rate, note timeliness, measured change on the PHQ-9, GAD-7 or CORE-10. Services report these numbers to commissioners; put yours on the CV.
- Supervision, groups and consultation. Supervising trainees, running groups and consulting with GPs or psychiatry make a stretched service go further and are worth a bullet each.
Psychologist personal statement and career objective examples
Qualified psychologists use a personal statement: protected title and HCPC registration, years, client groups, therapies, assessments, one outcome number. Graduates and assistants use a career objective, because the reader needs to know which job you are aiming at in a field with many titles.
HCPC-registered clinical psychologist with 6 years' experience in adult community mental health, treating mood, anxiety and trauma difficulties with CBT, CPT and ACT. Holds a caseload of 22 with 90% of notes completed within 24 hours, completes 35 cognitive and ADHD assessments a year, and supervises two trainee clinical psychologists. Chartered member of the BPS.
HCPC-registered educational psychologist with 7 years in a local authority educational psychology service. Writes 55 to 65 psychological advice reports a year for EHC needs assessments within the statutory deadline, using the WISC-V, BAS3 and structured observation, runs consultation with SENCOs at 12 schools, and delivers therapeutic work with 15 pupils a week.
BSc (Hons) Psychology graduate (2:1, BPS-accredited, eligible for GBC) seeking an assistant psychologist or research assistant role. Completed 300 hours as a support worker in a residential service for adolescents and two years as a volunteer research assistant coding 400+ interview transcripts for a depression study. Trained in de-escalation and UK GDPR.
Trainee clinical psychologist on an NHS-funded, BPS-accredited DClinPsy, thesis viva passed (September 2026); HCPC registration expected by December 2026. Seeking a Band 7 clinical psychologist post in primary care mental health; experienced in brief CBT, PHQ-9-based measurement and joint working with 8 GPs.

Psychologist and therapist CV bullets: weak to strong
Clinical CVs are full of duty statements ("provided individual and group therapy"). Turn each into what you did, for whom, how many and with what result. Never include identifying client details; numbers about your caseload are fine, stories about a client are a confidentiality and UK GDPR problem.
| Weak (duty only) | Strong (client group, method, volume, result) |
|---|---|
| Provided individual therapy to adults. | Held a caseload of 22 to 26 adults with depression, panic disorder and PTSD, delivering CBT and prolonged exposure in 50-minute sessions, about 1,000 sessions a year. |
| Conducted psychological assessments. | Administered and interpreted 45 assessment batteries a year (WAIS-IV, WMS-IV, PAI, DIVA-5) for differential diagnosis and ADHD; average report turnaround 12 days. |
| Facilitated group therapy. | Led a weekly 10-member DBT skills group for 3 years; completion rate 78% and self-harm episodes reported by members fell by half over each 24-week cycle. |
| Used evidence-based practices. | Tracked every client with the PHQ-9 and GAD-7; 58% of clients completing 10 or more sessions reached reliable improvement in 2025, against a service average of 47%. |
| Maintained clinical documentation. | Completed 97% of clinical notes on SystmOne within 24 hours and passed two clinical record audits with no findings. |
| Supervised trainees. | Supervised 3 trainee clinical psychologists a year on placement (weekly individual supervision, live observation, competency ratings) and taught the programme's teaching day on risk assessment. |
| Performed crisis intervention. | Completed 80+ suicide and violence risk assessments a year using the C-SSRS, wrote collaborative safety plans and arranged 11 informal admissions with the crisis resolution and home treatment team. |

List 10 to 14 skills and name the actual protocols, instruments and systems. Shortlisters and applicant tracking systems look for the specific words in the advert and person specification, and "strong interpersonal skills" is not one of them.

How to write your psychology degree, HCPC registration and training on a CV
Titles in this field are legally controlled. In the UK the HCPC protects "practitioner psychologist", "registered psychologist" and seven domain titles: clinical, counselling, educational, forensic, health, occupational, and sport and exercise psychologist. The usual route is a BPS-accredited degree or conversion course giving Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC), then an HCPC-approved qualification in your domain: for clinical psychology, the three-year DClinPsy, with salaried NHS-funded training places. Psychological wellbeing practitioners, CBT therapists and counsellors are separate professions, not psychologists. Use only the title you are registered under.
Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy), HCPC-approved and BPS-accredited, Northbridge University, 2019. Thesis: sleep and rumination in late-life depression. Placements: adult mental health, child and family, learning disability, older adults, and a specialist placement in a hospital clinical health psychology service.
HCPC registered practitioner psychologist (clinical psychologist), since 2019, registration number available on request. Chartered Psychologist (CPsychol), BPS, 2021.
Doctorate in Counselling Psychology completed July 2026 (viva passed, corrections approved); HCPC registration applied for in August 2026 and expected shortly.
BSc (Hons) Psychology, 2:1, Northbridge University, 2026. BPS-accredited (eligible for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership). Relevant modules: Psychopathology, Research Methods, Psychometrics, Statistics (SPSS). Dissertation on test anxiety in first-generation university students.
HCPC registered practitioner psychologist (educational psychologist), 2020. Doctorate in Educational and Child Psychology, 2020.
- Chartered membership of the BPS (CPsychol), Associate Fellowship (AFBPsS) and entry on the BPS Register of Applied Psychology Practice Supervisors (RAPPS) are optional and strong signals; list them with the year.
- List therapy trainings with the provider and year (for example EMDR training through an accredited provider, PE intensive training). Do not write "accredited in CBT" unless BABCP actually accredited you; write "trained in".
- Training routes, funding and title rules differ between domains and between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Check the HCPC standards and your programme's guidance before stating that you are eligible to register.
Psychology CV with no experience (graduates and students)
A psychology degree does not qualify you to practise, but a BPS-accredited one with GBC qualifies you for the jobs that lead there: assistant psychologist, trainee psychological wellbeing practitioner (PWP), healthcare assistant or support worker in mental health services, research assistant, behaviour support worker, recovery worker and helpline worker. Your CV should aim at one of these, not at "psychologist".
- 1Put the target job title under your name ("Assistant Psychologist" or "Research Assistant"), not "Psychology Graduate".
- 2Write a two-line career objective with your degree and classification (a 2:1 or First matters for many assistant and doctorate routes), GBC eligibility, the client group you want to work with and any hours you have already logged.
- 3Move Education to the top and add relevant modules, your dissertation, and lab or statistics tools (SPSS, R, Qualtrics).
- 4List placements, volunteering and research work like jobs: hours per week, number of participants or clients, tasks (coding transcripts, running study sessions, leading activity groups), and your supervisor's profession.
- 5Add trainings that are quick to get and valued: Mental Health First Aid, Emergency First Aid at Work, de-escalation or breakaway training, safeguarding adults and children, information governance. Mention an Enhanced DBS check if you already hold one.
- 6Keep it to one page, no photo, PDF.
Ran 90+ study sessions for an anxiety and sleep study over two years: took consent, administered the PHQ-9, GAD-7 and PSQI, coded interview transcripts in NVivo and entered data in REDCap with a 0.5% error rate on double-entry checks.
Supported 8 to 10 young people a shift in a residential mental health service (20 hours a week for 10 months), co-ran daily skills groups from the service's DBT-informed programme and recorded incidents on the electronic record the same shift.
Format, length and what to leave off
- Two pages for a qualified psychologist; one page for graduate and assistant applicants. Send the full academic CV only when asked, and for NHS posts put the effort into the supporting statement.
- Order: header with title and HCPC registration, personal statement, registration and qualifications, clinical experience, assessment and supervision (if you want them to stand out), education and training, selected publications or presentations (3 to 5 at most on a two-page CV).
- Use a clean single-column layout like the cvplex psychologist or medical-clean template. Many employers use applicant tracking systems that read plain text; no photo, no date of birth, no columns, no tables for skills.
- Put your doctorate after your name ("Maya Feldman, DClinPsy") or use "Dr", but never a protected title you are not registered under. "Clinical Psychologist" goes in the title line only if you are on the HCPC register with that title.
- Never include client stories, initials or diagnoses tied to a person. Numbers about caseload and outcomes are fine.
- Dates by month and year. Training years (assistant posts, trainee placements) are expected to be short; label them clearly so they do not look like job hopping.
Words to mirror from the advert and person specification when they apply to you: HCPC registered, clinical psychologist, practitioner psychologist, DClinPsy, BPS, chartered, psychological assessment, formulation, evidence-based, NICE, CBT, DBT, ACT, EMDR, trauma-informed, primary care, community mental health, video consultation, caseload, RiO, SystmOne, supervision, risk assessment, safeguarding, outcome measures, Band 7, Band 8a.
Frequently asked questions
How do I write a psychologist CV?
Put your doctorate after your name and your HCPC registration and protected title in the header. Write a 3–4 line personal statement with years, client groups, therapies, assessments and one outcome number. Then list registration and qualifications, clinical experience with numbers (caseload, sessions, assessments, DNA rate, outcomes), education and training. Two pages, plain layout, PDF, no client details.
Do psychologists use a CV or an application form?
Both, and sometimes a full academic CV. NHS posts usually go through an application form and supporting statement; private, charity, school and corporate employers ask for a two-page CV; academic and research posts want the full academic CV. When an advert does not say, send a two-page CV and offer the publication list on request.
What skills should I put on a psychologist CV?
Named therapies (CBT, ACT, DBT, PE, EMDR), named assessment instruments (WAIS-IV, WISC-V, ADOS-2, PAI), outcome measures (PHQ-9, GAD-7, CORE-10), risk assessment (C-SSRS), your clinical record system (RiO, SystmOne), video consultation, supervision, and safeguarding and documentation. Skip generic soft skills.
How do I write a psychology degree on a CV?
Degree, classification, university and year: "BSc (Hons) Psychology, 2:1, Northbridge University, 2026." Add BPS accreditation and GBC eligibility, relevant modules and your dissertation while you are early in your career. For a doctorate, add that the programme is HCPC-approved, the thesis title and your main placements.
How do I write a psychology CV with no experience?
Aim it at a specific entry job (assistant psychologist, trainee PWP, support worker, research assistant). Put education first with modules and your dissertation, then list placements, research and volunteering like jobs with hours and numbers. Add quick trainings such as Mental Health First Aid, first aid and de-escalation, and write a two-line career objective.
What is a good career objective for a psychology CV?
Two lines with facts: the degree, the target role, the client group, and hours or training you already have. "BSc Psychology graduate (2:1, GBC eligible) with 250 hours as a support worker in an adolescent inpatient unit and Mental Health First Aid training, seeking an assistant psychologist post in CAMHS."
How long should a psychologist CV be?
Two pages for a qualified psychologist, one page for graduate and assistant applicants. Keep the academic CV as a separate document; it can be as long as your record requires.
