Physics CV or resume? The employer decides

This is the question most physics job seekers get wrong, and it costs interviews on both sides. The two documents are not the same and they are not interchangeable.

If you are applying to both worlds at once, keep two files and never send the wrong one. A search committee reading a one-page resume assumes you have no record. A semiconductor hiring manager reading an eight-page CV assumes you cannot summarize.

LaTeX physics CV templates look beautiful and often parse badly. Two-column layouts, custom fonts and tables scramble in applicant tracking systems. For industry, export a single-column PDF with plain section headings. Keep the LaTeX version for academic applications, where a human opens the file.

What R&D hiring managers check in the first 30 seconds

  • Can you run the technique they need? A group hiring for thin-film deposition scans for sputtering, ALD, MBE, ellipsometry. If those words appear only inside a paper title, they are easy to miss. Put them in the skills block and in the bullets.
  • Did you build things or only analyze them? Industry values physicists who can wire, align, pump down and debug hardware. Say which instrument you built, not just what you measured.
  • Can you code at a working level? Python is the default. State the libraries. 'Familiar with Python' reads as no.
  • Did anything reach a result outside your own thesis? A yield number, a noise floor, a spec you met, a paper cited, a patent granted, a design a team adopted.

Physics resumes usually fail on the same thing: five years of beautiful work described with no outcome. Tell me the noise floor before and after. Tell me what the tool cost per wafer. Nobody on my side is going to score your physics; we are asking whether you can finish something and hand it to a team.

Physics resume skills: group them the way a lab does

One long alphabetical list is useless. Split the block into techniques, instruments, computation and everything else, so a reader hunting for one capability finds it in a second.

  • Techniques and methods: interferometry, spectroscopy (Raman, XPS, FTIR), X-ray diffraction, scanning probe microscopy, laser cooling and trapping, transport measurement, radiation detection, design of experiments, uncertainty analysis.

On a CV you list everything. On a two-page industry resume you compress. Use a single line of counts near the top, then a short 'Selected publications' block at the bottom with the two or three items closest to the job.

Medical physicist resume: the credential comes first

Medical physics hiring is credential-gated in a way the rest of physics is not, so the top of the resume looks different. Clinical departments want to see board status and residency before anything else.

  • Board certification by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) in Therapeutic Medical Physics, Diagnostic Medical Physics or Nuclear Medical Physics. Write the exact subfield and the year, or write 'ABR Part 2 passed, Part 3 scheduled 2026' if you are mid-process.
  • A CAMPEP-accredited residency or graduate program. Name it. Many postings screen on it before a human reads the file.
  • State licensure. Several states license medical physicists and the rules differ, so check the requirements for the state you are applying in and list the license number where you hold one.
  • Clinical equipment by vendor and model: linear accelerators, treatment planning systems, brachytherapy afterloaders, CT simulators.
  • QA programs you have run, named the way the field names them, such as annual and monthly linac QA to AAPM TG-142 or patient-specific IMRT QA.

Physics resume with no industry experience (new grad or new PhD)

You have more than you think. Graduate research is work experience: you ran equipment, hit deadlines, managed a budget and trained people. Write it as a job, not as a course of study.

Format, length and getting through the software

  • Length: one page for a BS or MS with under 5 years of work, two pages after a PhD plus a few years. A full academic CV has no page limit and follows the department's instructions instead.
  • File: PDF unless the posting asks for a Word file. Single column. Standard headings (Summary, Skills, Experience, Education, Publications). No photo, no date of birth, no marital status on a US resume.
  • Notation: write Greek letters and units in plain text where you can. 'per root hertz' survives every parser; the symbol version may not. Superscripts often flatten, so '10^8' is safer than a formatted exponent.
  • Keywords: mirror the posting's exact technique names, instrument brands and software. If it says 'thin film deposition (PVD/ALD)', use those words.
  • Clearance: if a national lab or defense job needs one, state your status plainly ('Active DOE Q clearance' or 'US citizen, eligible for clearance'). Do not overstate an expired one.
