Math Teacher Resume Examples & Writing Guide

A resume for a licensed high school math teacher with eleven years in public schools. The names are invented. Notice that the license and endorsement sit in the header, every job names the exact courses and student load, and results are given as growth with a starting point.

Math positions are hard to fill in most districts, so the screen is less about whether you are qualified and more about what you can cover and how your students do.

• License and endorsement area, and whether it is valid in that state. Grade band matters: a 7-12 mathematics license and a middle-grades license open different doors.
• Which courses you can teach tomorrow. Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Statistics, Precalculus, Calculus, AP or IB, and whether you can also take a section of something else.
• Student results with a starting point. Pass rates, growth percentiles, AP score distributions, failure rates. Every teacher says they raised achievement; the ones who give the baseline get called.
• How you handle the range. In one Algebra I room there are students two grade levels behind and students ready for more. Principals want to hear what you actually do about that.
• Classroom management and the extras. Whether you can run a room, and whether you will coach, sponsor a club, run a math team or take on data leadership.

“I hire math teachers every year and the resumes blur together. The one that stands out says: this is the course, this is what the pass rate was when I got it, this is what I changed, this is what it is now. And it tells me whether they can take AP, because that decides my schedule.”

Teaching licenses are issued state by state, so the details differ everywhere. Write what you hold, the state, the subject and grade band, and the expiry. If you are applying out of state, say where you stand on reciprocity rather than leaving the principal to guess.

• Endorsements worth naming when you hold them: gifted, English learner or bilingual, special education, and any additional subject you are certified to teach.
• National Board Certification in Adolescence and Young Adulthood Mathematics is a strong line and some districts pay a stipend for it, so put it near the top.
• AP training from a College Board Summer Institute, or IB subject training, tells a principal you can take those sections immediately.
• Requirements, exam names and renewal cycles vary by state, so check the state department of education rather than copying what a friend wrote in another state.

Three or four lines: grade level, courses, your best result with its baseline, and anything extra you bring to a schedule. Use an objective only for a first teaching job or a career change.

Teaching resumes fill up with things every teacher does. Give the course, the number of students, the change and the starting point.

Group them into what you teach, how you teach it, and the systems you run. Name the platforms, because districts standardize on specific ones and want people who already know theirs.

• Courses and content: Pre-Algebra, Algebra I and II, Geometry, Precalculus, Calculus, AP Calculus AB or BC, AP Statistics, IB mathematics, data science and quantitative reasoning electives.
• Instruction: standards-aligned unit and lesson planning, common assessment design, standards-based grading, spiral review, problem-based tasks, small-group instruction, retake and redo policies.
• Working with a range of learners: IEP and 504 accommodations, co-teaching with special education staff, supports for English learners, gifted extension work, MTSS and RTI intervention.
• Data: state end-of-course and state test results, NWEA MAP or i-Ready growth, item analysis, tracking a cohort across a year.
• Technology: Desmos, GeoGebra, Delta Math, IXL, Google Classroom or Canvas, and the student information system you use (PowerSchool, Infinite Campus, Skyward).
• Classroom management: routines and procedures, restorative conversations, phone and pacing policies, building a room where students will risk a wrong answer in front of others.
• Beyond the classroom: department leadership, mentoring, curriculum writing, math team or club sponsorship, coaching, tutoring programs, family engagement.

Districts hire new math teachers every year and many are short of them, so a thin resume is not fatal. What a principal needs is evidence you have stood in front of students and that your licensing is on track.

1. 1Put licensure status at the top with dates: exam passed, program completion, when you will be eligible to teach.
2. 2Write student teaching like a real job: school, grade levels, courses, number of sections and students, and what changed while you were there.
3. 3Count all the teaching-adjacent work you have done: tutoring, summer programs, substitute days, coaching, camp instruction, teaching assistant work, training adults at a previous job.
4. 4For career changers, connect your field to the math: engineering, finance, data work and the military all give you applications students ask about. Say what you will bring into lessons.
5. 5Name what else you can cover. Willingness to teach a second subject, coach a sport or sponsor a club genuinely affects hiring in small schools.
6. 6Add a short portfolio line if you have one: a unit plan, a lesson video or a task bank you can share on request.

• One page for a new teacher, two pages once you have several years, leadership work and a course list. Two pages is normal and accepted in education.
• License first, in the header or immediately under it. It is the first thing screened.
• No photo, no date of birth, no personal details in the US. Many districts remove identifying information before review anyway.
• Most districts apply through their own system rather than email, so expect to retype everything into an application form. Keep a plain-text version of your resume ready to paste in.
• A cover letter is still expected for teaching jobs, unlike many fields. Use it to explain your approach to a mixed-skill classroom and why that school.
• Mirror the posting: if it asks for Algebra I, MTSS experience, standards-based grading or a specific platform, use those exact words where they are true.
• In the UK and much of the Commonwealth this job is advertised as a maths teacher and the document is a CV. For US districts keep US terms, US license names and resume conventions.

Timing matters more in teaching than in most fields. Most hiring happens between February and July, and the best-funded positions post early, so having this document ready in the winter is worth as much as another round of editing.
