Dental Hygienist CV Examples & Writing Guide

This sample is for a GDC-registered dental hygienist with seven years in practice who has built a strong periodontal programme. The name, practices and training school are invented. New graduates and students should keep this layout and swap the experience section for clinical placements; there is a full new-graduate version below.

Hygiene hiring is usually done by the principal dentist or the practice manager, sometimes both in one sitting, and often with a trial day already half-planned. Four things decide whether you get that day.

• Registration and scope. GDC registration as a dental hygienist (or as a dental therapist, which covers hygiene too), your indemnity, and whether you are comfortable seeing patients on direct access. The GDC Scope of Practice applies across the UK, so the real question is which additional skills you are trained and confident in.
• Pace and appointment length. How many patients a day, how long the appointments are, and whether you have worked with a dental nurse assisting. A hygienist used to 45 minute appointments in an independent private practice and one running 30 minute appointments in a busy corporate practice are different hires.
• Perio scope. Do you do BPE at every recall, give local anaesthesia for quadrant root surface debridement, explain periodontal treatment and its cost yourself? Perio is where most hygiene value sits, and most CVs never mention it.
• Software and imaging. Software of Excellence (Exact), Dentally, R4 or Pearl, plus your sensor system. A practice that runs Dentally would rather not train you from zero in week one.

“The CVs that stand out tell me how many patients a day and what their perio numbers look like. Everyone writes "provided patient education and performed cleanings". Nobody writes "took perio acceptance from a third to two thirds". The second one gets a trial day the same week.”

Put this in its own block, high on the page, and be precise. Registration is with the General Dental Council for the whole UK, and the practice has to check it, and your indemnity, before you see a patient.

Use a personal statement if you have worked as a hygienist. Use a career objective only if you are a student, a new graduate or moving to the UK, because in those cases the dentist's first question is about your registration timing, and an objective answers it. Either way, keep it to three or four lines and put your registration in the first sentence.

The phrase "dental hygienist job description for CV" gets searched a lot, and it usually leads people to copy the same six duties everyone else has. A dentist reading twelve of those cannot tell them apart. Build each bullet like this instead.

1. 1Name the clinical procedure exactly: scale and polish, quadrant root surface debridement, periodontal maintenance, full-mouth debridement, fissure sealants, fluoride varnish, radiographs.
2. 2Add the volume: patients a day, quadrants a week, radiographs taken, sealants placed, patients on maintenance.
3. 3Name the tool or system where it matters: ultrasonic unit, sensor brand, practice management software.
4. 4Add a quality or business number: acceptance rate, reappointment rate, retake rate, failed appointment percentage, takings per day, on-time performance.
5. 5Read it back and ask whether it could describe any hygienist anywhere. If it could, it needs a number.

Group them so a dentist can scan. Clinical first, then software, then the human skills that actually matter in a hygiene chair.

Clinical skills:

• Adult and children's scale and polish, periodontal maintenance, full-mouth debridement
• Root surface debridement by quadrant, ultrasonic and hand instrumentation
• BPE, six-point pocket charting, bleeding on probing, furcation and mobility
• Local anaesthesia within GDC scope, and inhalation sedation where trained as an additional skill
• Digital radiography: bitewings, periapicals, panoramic, and where relevant CBCT capture, under IR(ME)R
• Fissure sealants, fluoride varnish, desensitising agents
• Locally delivered antimicrobials on the dentist's prescription
• Implant and peri-implant maintenance with titanium-safe instruments
• Oral cancer screening and intraoral photography
• Impressions and tooth whitening on prescription where trained
• Infection control, decontamination to HTM 01-05, sharps and inoculation injury procedures

Software and equipment:

• Software of Excellence (Exact), Dentally, R4, Pearl
• Dexis, Carestream and Planmeca sensors, plus panoramic units
• Cavitron and piezo ultrasonic scalers, air polishing units
• Intraoral cameras, caries detection devices, diode laser where trained
• NHS charge bands, private fee scales and practice plan basics

The human side, said plainly: explaining a perio diagnosis so a patient agrees to treatment, staying calm with an anxious or gagging patient, working with children, keeping a list on time, and getting along with a dental nurse and a reception team you share the day with. Those are hireable skills. "Excellent communication skills" on its own is not.

A new-graduate hygiene CV is not empty. Hygiene training gives you hundreds of documented patient visits, and most graduates never put a single number from clinic on the page. That is the difference between a CV that gets interviewed and one that does not.

• Turn clinic into an experience entry. Name your programme, the dates, and what you completed: total patient visits, root surface debridement quadrants, radiographs, sealants, perio cases by stage.
• List outreach placements separately: community dental service, hospital, care home, children's clinic, school oral health programme, special care clinic.
• State your final exam and GDC registration timeline exactly. Practices schedule around it.
• Include dental nursing, reception or decontamination jobs you held before or during training; a hygienist who has run a reception desk is more useful, not less.
• Add anything that shows patient volume and stamina from another job: retail, waiting tables, care work, healthcare assistant work.

• One page for up to 10 years. Two pages only with a long teaching, community dental service or specialist history worth the space.
• Registration and training block near the top, not buried at the bottom, because that is the first thing checked.
• Simple single-column layout. Corporate dental groups run applications through tracking software; independent practices print your CV and hand it to the dentist.
• No photo, no date of birth, no marital status. That is the UK standard, and your GDC registration is the credential every practice checks.
• Say your availability in plain words: full time, four days, Saturdays, locum. Many hygiene jobs are 3 or 4 days and many hygienists are self-employed, so the dentist is filtering for fit.
• If you have locumed through an agency or app, list it as one entry with the number of practices and the range of software you handled. That is a strength, not a gap.
