Copywriter Resume Examples & Writing Guide

A copywriter resume is a writing sample whether you meant it to be or not. It needs a working portfolio link in the header, three or four pieces of proof that your words moved a number, and the channels you write for. Below is a full sample plus bullets, summaries and a no-experience version.

The portfolio URL is in the contact line, not buried at the bottom. A creative director will click it inside thirty seconds, and if there is no link, many will stop there.

Your portfolio does half the work, so link it properly

For most writing jobs the resume gets you the click and the portfolio gets you the interview. Do these five things and you will be ahead of most applicants.

  1. 1Put the URL in the header next to your email. Not "portfolio available on request", and not a PDF attachment nobody opens.
  2. 2Make it a plain, clickable link with no login, no password and no request form. A locked portfolio is a closed door.
  3. 3Show 6 to 10 pieces, not 40. Pick the ones closest to the job you are applying for, and put the strongest first.
  4. 4Give each piece three lines of context: what the brief was, what you wrote, what happened. "Homepage rewrite for a B2B tool, demo requests went from 22 to 41 a month" beats a screenshot with no caption.
  5. 5If your best work is under NDA or was never published, write a short case study describing the problem and your approach without naming the client, or create a spec piece and label it clearly as spec.
Never put a typo in a copywriter resume. It sounds obvious, and it is still the most common reason creative directors put a writer's application down. Read it out loud, then have someone else read it.

What a creative director or marketing lead checks first

  • Does the resume itself read well? Rhythm, clarity, no filler. This is the only job where the document is the audition.
  • Which channels do you write? Email, paid social, landing pages, long-form, product copy, scripts, packaging. Teams hire for a gap, and the gap is usually a specific channel.
  • Can you write to a number? Even brand-side teams want to see one or two performance results. Conversion rate, open rate, cost per acquisition, organic sessions, demo requests.
  • How do you work with others? Copywriters ship with designers, product managers and legal review. Say who you partnered with and how many rounds it took.
  • Category fit. B2B software, DTC consumer, healthcare, finance and regulated industries all write differently. Name yours.

The portfolio link goes at the top or the application is over. After that, one question: did this writer ever change a number? Not every piece has to, but a resume with no result on it reads like someone who has never been near a test.

Copywriter bullets that beat "wrote engaging content"

The most common bullet on a copywriter resume is "wrote engaging content across multiple channels". It tells a hiring manager nothing about what you can do. Here is the same claim rewritten.

WeakStrong
Wrote engaging content across multiple channels.Wrote 12 to 16 email campaigns and 9 lifecycle flows a month for 240,000 subscribers, holding a 41% open rate.
Improved website copy.Rewrote the pricing and checkout pages after 30 customer interviews; conversion rose from 2.6% to 3.1% and held for 6 months.
Managed social media copy.Produced 25 to 35 ad variants a month for Meta and TikTok testing; the winning hook cut cost per acquisition by $9.40.
Collaborated with the design team.Wrote in Figma alongside 4 designers and shipped 90% of copy without a voice edit after the brand guide launched.
Wrote SEO content.Wrote 60+ briefs and articles around a healthcare topic cluster that reached 34,000 organic sessions a month within a year.
Helped with client pitches.Presented concepts in 9 new business pitches and wrote the winning work for 2 accounts worth about $400K in annual fees.
Created brand messaging.Built the brand voice guide and messaging framework now used by 6 product teams, cutting copy review rounds from 4 to 2.
Wrote video scripts.Scripted 14 product videos of 30 to 90 seconds, including 3 that were cut down into paid social ads and ran for two quarters.
If you truly have no numbers, use scale and process instead: how many pieces, what review cycle, how many stakeholders, what turnaround. "Turned around 20 product descriptions a day at a 2-hour SLA" is a real fact and reads far better than an adjective.

Skills to put on a copywriter resume

Skip "creative", "detail-oriented" and "excellent communication skills". Name channels, methods and tools instead.

What you write:

  • Email and lifecycle sequences
  • Landing pages and conversion copy
  • Paid social, search and display ads
  • Long-form articles and SEO content
  • Product copy and UX microcopy
  • Video, radio and podcast scripts
  • Brand voice guides and messaging frameworks

How you work:

  • Customer interviews and voice-of-customer research
  • Creative briefs and concepting with art directors
  • A/B testing and reading the results honestly
  • Editing other writers and giving usable feedback
  • Working with legal and compliance review in regulated categories
  • Using AI drafting tools with your own editing on top, if that is how your team works

Tools worth naming:

  • Figma, for writing copy directly in design files
  • Google Analytics 4, Looker Studio or Amplitude
  • Ahrefs, Semrush or Clearscope for keyword and brief work
  • Klaviyo, HubSpot, Braze or Mailchimp for email
  • Contentful, WordPress or Webflow for publishing
  • Asana, Jira or Notion for the queue

One note on AI tools. Most marketing teams in 2026 use them and most hiring managers expect you to as well. Being straight about it helps: say what you use them for (research, variant generation, first drafts) and what you do yourself (the idea, the voice, the final line). What loses the job is a portfolio that reads like it was generated and never edited.

Copywriter resume with no experience

This is the most searched copywriter resume question, and the honest answer is that a portfolio matters more than a job title here. Nobody can check whether the brief came from a client or from you. They can check whether the writing is good.

  1. 1Build 6 to 8 spec pieces for real brands you like: an email flow, a landing page, three ad variants, a product page rewrite. Label them clearly as spec work.
  2. 2Get two or three real pieces by writing free or cheap for a local business, a nonprofit or a friend's startup, then ask for permission to publish and any numbers they can share.
  3. 3Publish your own writing somewhere with an audience, even a small one. A newsletter with 400 engaged readers is evidence.
  4. 4Write the resume around writing volume and process, not job titles: pieces produced, deadlines met, revision rounds, tools used.
  5. 5Apply to junior copywriter, content writer, marketing assistant and agency internship postings. Agencies hire juniors far more predictably than in-house teams do.
  6. 6Send a short, specific note with the application that shows you read their work. In this field the note is a writing sample too.
Objective, entry level
English graduate and newsletter writer seeking a junior copywriter role at a consumer brand or agency. Publishes a weekly food newsletter to 1,400 subscribers at a 48% open rate and has built a spec portfolio of 8 pieces covering email, landing pages and paid social.
Spec work bullet
Built a spec portfolio of 8 pieces including a 5-email welcome flow, two landing pages and 12 ad variants for existing DTC brands, each with a written brief and rationale.
Volunteer or small client bullet
Rewrote the website and donation page for a local animal shelter, working from 6 volunteer interviews; monthly online donations rose from 38 to 61 in the following quarter.
Transferable bullet, customer service
Answered 80+ customer emails a day for two years and wrote the 30 canned responses the team still uses, which is where the voice-of-customer language in the portfolio comes from.

Format, length and getting past the screener

  • One page unless you have 10+ years, then two. Copywriters are judged on editing, and a bloated resume argues against you.
  • No photo, no date of birth in the US. Portfolio URL, email, phone and city are enough in the header.
  • Send a PDF with the link live. Test the link from a phone before you send it.
  • Resist the fancy layout. Marketing teams screen through Greenhouse, Lever or Workday, and a two-column design with a sidebar can arrive scrambled. Save the design ambition for the portfolio site.
  • Mirror the posting's words: copywriter, content writer, brand voice, conversion copy, lifecycle email, paid social, SEO, CMS, A/B testing, and the specific tools they name.
  • If the posting names a category (fintech, healthcare, ecommerce, B2B SaaS), get that word into your summary if it is true.
  • Freelancers: give the freelance work a job entry with dates, a client count and two or three named project types. A resume that hides three years of freelancing looks like a gap.

One last check before you send. Read the resume as if it were an ad for you. Does the first line make anyone want to read the second? If not, you already know what to do, because it is the same job you do every day.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a copywriter resume?

Put the portfolio link in the header, write a two-sentence summary naming your channels and category with one result, then jobs with bullets that show volume and outcomes. Add a skills block covering what you write, how you work and which tools you use. One page for most writers.

What skills should a copywriter put on a resume?

Name the channels you write (email, landing pages, paid social, long-form, product copy, scripts), the methods you use (customer interviews, briefs, A/B testing, brand voice work) and the tools (Figma, GA4, Ahrefs or Semrush, Klaviyo or HubSpot, a CMS). Skip generic traits like "creative" and "detail-oriented".

How do I write a copywriter resume with no experience?

Build a spec portfolio of six to eight pieces for real brands, add two or three real pieces from a nonprofit or small business, and publish your own writing somewhere. Write the resume around volume, process and results instead of job titles, and apply to junior and agency roles where hiring managers expect exactly this.

Should a copywriter resume be creative or plain?

Plain layout, creative writing. The words are your audition, and the file has to survive an applicant tracking system and a hiring manager's phone screen. Keep it single column with normal headings and put the design ambition into your portfolio site.

What is a good summary for a copywriter resume?

Two sentences: your years and channels, your category, and one number. For example: "Copywriter with seven years across agency and in-house writing email, landing pages and paid social for DTC and B2B software. Lifted checkout conversion 18% with a pricing page rewrite."

How many portfolio pieces should I include?

Six to ten, chosen for the job you are applying to, strongest first. Each one needs three lines: the brief, what you wrote, what happened. A large, unsorted archive reads as an inability to edit, which is the one thing a copywriter cannot afford to signal.

Should I mention using AI writing tools on my resume?

It is fine and increasingly expected. Say what you use them for (research, variants, first drafts) and what stays yours (the idea, the voice, the final edit). What harms you is portfolio work that reads unedited, so put your judgment on display rather than hiding the tooling.

Ready to write yours?

The builder suggests a summary from your own experience, then checks it against the job posting.
