Construction Site Manager CV Examples & Writing Guide

A site manager CV is read as a track record of projects. For each one a hiring director wants the type, the contract value, the procurement route and contract form, your role, whether it finished on time and on budget, and the safety numbers. Get that on page one, then support it with programme, cost and quality bullets.

Notice the personal statement carries five numbers: value range, cost variance, programme variance, safety rate and years. A construction director reads those five and decides whether to turn to page two.

Site manager, project manager or construction manager? Use the title that fits your scope

"Superintendent" is the US title for this work. UK adverts use site manager, senior site manager, project manager or construction manager, and each means a slightly different scope. If you copy a US template that says "superintendent", you will miss most UK adverts.

If you have done thisUse this UK title on the CV
Ran the site day to day: gangs, sequence, safety, inspectionsSite manager, or senior site manager on larger or more complex jobs. This is the closest UK match to a US superintendent.
Ran the site plus the budget, contracts and client relationshipProject manager, or construction manager. Contracts manager if you look after several sites at once.
Reported to a site manager on one area or trade packageAssistant site manager, or package or section manager.
Managed the client's interests rather than the contractor'sClient-side project manager, employer's agent, or clerk of works for quality inspection.
Ran a single trade crew on the toolsForeman or site supervisor. Do not call this a site manager role on a UK CV; it will not survive the interview.

The clean solution is a headline that covers two: "Construction Site Manager / Senior Site Manager". Then use the exact title from each advert in your personal statement when you apply.

The numbers a construction manager CV has to carry

Hiring at this level is a risk decision. A director is asking whether you will lose them money on a £25M job. Seven numbers answer that, and most CVs carry two.

  • Project value range, per project. "£5M to £48M" beats "large-scale projects".
  • Project type, procurement route and contract form. Healthcare, residential, industrial, education, fit-out, and whether it was traditional, design and build or two-stage, on JCT or NEC4. Clients hire for exactly this match.
  • Programme result. Days ahead of or behind the contract completion date, measured at practical completion. If you were late, say why and what you recovered.
  • Cost result. Variance against the target cost, contract sum or budget, as a percentage. Risk allowance spent versus carried is also strong.
  • Safety numbers. RIDDOR reportables, lost-time injuries, hours worked, and your accident frequency rate (AFR) if you know it. Considerate Constructors Scheme scores help too. This is a gate at most large contractors.
  • Volume of the paper. RFIs, submittals, compensation events or variations, with turnaround times. It proves you actually ran the process.
  • Handover. Snagging list size and days to close, defects, completion certificate and health and safety file against the contract date. Everyone talks about starting jobs; finishing them is rarer.

“Two CVs cross my desk for a healthcare job. One says "managed large construction projects from start to finish". The other says "£48M medical centre, NEC4 Option C, 14 days early, 1.1% under target cost, two reportables in 1.6 million hours". The second one gets the call, even if the first person is just as good, because I cannot see it.”

Add a project list instead of a longer job history

After ten years, listing every employer with six bullets each gets unreadable. Put a short project list on page two: one line per project with the facts a director wants. Four to eight projects is plenty, and pick the ones closest to the job you are applying for.

Healthcare
Medical and diagnostic imaging centre, 20,400 m², £48M, NEC4 Option C. Role: senior site manager. Handed over 14 days early, 1.1% under target cost, 190-item snagging list closed in 19 days.
Residential
310-flat build-to-rent scheme over a podium car park, £30M, design and build. Role: site manager. Completed 6 weeks late after a 9-week weather delay, 3 weeks recovered by resequencing finishes.
Education
Primary school extension and refurbishment, 5,800 m², £15M, traditional JCT contract, school open throughout. Role: assistant site manager. 310 submittals at 5-day average turnaround, no slip to the summer holiday works.
Industrial
Food processing plant extension, 7,800 m², £22M, design and build next to a live production facility. Role: site manager. Zero production shutdowns caused by construction over 14 months.
Fit-out
Law firm Cat B office fit-out, 4,500 m² over 3 floors, £7M, occupied tower. Role: site manager. All work in night and weekend windows, handed over on the contract date with 22 snagging items.
If a project ended badly, either leave it off the list or write it honestly with what you did about it. Construction is a small industry and directors call people who were on the job. A recovered delay reads better than a delay you pretended did not happen.

Degrees, qualifications, cards and software worth listing

At this level credentials do get checked. List only what you hold, with the issuing body and the year.

  • Chartered membership of the Chartered Institute of Building (MCIOB). The recognised professional credential for construction managers in the UK, and asked for on many senior and public sector roles.
  • APM or PRINCE2 project management qualifications, or a PMP. Common on client-side and programme roles, less asked for on a main contractor's site team.
  • BREEAM Accredited Professional from BRE, if you have delivered projects targeting a BREEAM rating. Say the rating achieved on a real project, for example "BREEAM Excellent, certified 2023".
  • NEBOSH Construction Certificate, if safety is a big part of the role.
  • CSCS Black Manager card. It needs a recognised management qualification, such as the NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Construction Site Management, plus the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test for managers and professionals. Most major contractors require it.
  • SMSTS (the CITB 5-day Site Management Safety Training Scheme, refreshed every 5 years), plus Temporary Works Coordinator training and first aid. Rail and highways clients add sector cards such as Sentinel with PTS, or NRSWA.
  • Degree: a BSc in construction management, civil engineering or building surveying is the common path, but many strong site managers came up through the trades. If you did, put the apprenticeship, your trade NVQ and the NVQ Level 6 in Construction Site Management where the degree would go and let the project list do the arguing.
  • Legal duties, not licences: there is no contractor licence in the UK, but CDM 2015 places duties on the principal contractor, and the Building Safety Act 2022 brought stricter competence and sign-off requirements, especially for higher-risk residential buildings. If you have delivered one through the Building Safety Regulator's process, say so; if you have not, do not imply it.
  • Software to name if you use it: Procore, Autodesk Build or Viewpoint Field View, Bluebeam Revu, Asta Powerproject, Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, COINS or Causeway for cost, and Navisworks if you run clash coordination.
  • Say how you used it, not just that you have it: "ran the RFI and submittal registers in Procore for 640 RFIs" is worth ten software logos.

Format, ATS keywords and the US superintendent resume

  • Two pages: page one for personal statement, current roles and key results, page two for the project list, credentials and software. Three pages only if you are applying for a director role with a long portfolio.
  • No photo, no date of birth, no marital status on a UK CV. Reverse chronological, month and year dates.
  • Single column, PDF, plain headings. Large contractors and agencies screen through applicant tracking systems such as Workday or iCIMS, and multi-column layouts lose content.
  • Mirror the advert's words: site manager, senior site manager, construction manager, principal contractor, CDM 2015, JCT, NEC4, compensation event, early warning, RFI, look-ahead programme, snagging, practical completion, handover, AFR, SMSTS, CSCS, MCIOB, Procore, Asta.
  • Put the sectors in a line of their own if you have several: "Sectors: healthcare, residential, education, light industrial". Recruiters search by sector.
  • Quantify the team: company staff directed, subcontractor gangs at peak. "Managed 40 subcontractor gangs" is a different job from "managed 6".

If you are applying in the US, keep your real job title but add a US equivalent once, for example "Site Manager (US equivalent: project superintendent)". Translate the credentials too: SMSTS and CSCS are not recognised on a US job, so get the OSHA 30 early. And convert the units your reader uses, because square metres and pounds make a US director do arithmetic they will not bother doing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a construction manager CV?

Open with a personal statement carrying your value range, sectors, contract forms and one programme, cost and safety number each. Then two or three roles with bullets grouped by programme, cost, safety and quality. Add a project list, a credentials block and a software line. Two pages.

What is the difference between a site manager and a construction manager CV?

In the UK a site manager runs the site day to day, while a construction manager or project manager adds budget, contracts and the client relationship. The US calls the site role a superintendent. Use the title that matches your real scope, and mirror each advert's wording.

What skills should a construction site manager put on a CV?

Programme management and look-ahead planning, cost control against a target cost or budget, RFI and submittal management, change control (compensation events and variations), subcontractor coordination, CDM 2015 and site safety, quality control and handover. Then the software: Procore or Autodesk Build, Bluebeam Revu, Asta Powerproject or Primavera P6.

What is a good career objective for a construction management CV?

At this level a personal statement works better than a career objective, because you have a track record to lead with. Use an objective only if you are moving sector or stepping up from site manager, and make it concrete: what scope you want, the value range you have run and the credential you hold or are working towards.

Should every project go on a construction manager CV?

No. Pick four to eight projects closest to the job you want and put them in a one-line-each project list: type, size, value, contract form, your role, one result. It keeps a sixteen-year career on two pages and lets a director see the sector match instantly.

Do I need a degree to be a construction site manager?

Not always. A construction management or civil engineering degree is the common route and some client-side roles require one, but many site managers came up through the trades. If you did, lead with the project list and put your apprenticeship, the NVQ Level 6 in Construction Site Management and SMSTS where the degree would go.

How do I show safety performance on a construction CV?

Use real, checkable figures: RIDDOR reportables and lost-time injuries against hours worked, your accident frequency rate if you know it, Considerate Constructors scores, and the safety routines you ran (daily inspections, pre-task briefings, weekly audits). Vague claims about a "safety-first culture" are ignored; a number and a routine are not.
