Each bullet names a platform, a project size (I/O count, project value, lines, alarms) and a result (downtime hours, days ahead of schedule, rated speed). Controls hiring managers read platforms first, then results, then everything else.

What a controls manager or integrator checks first

Automation CVs are usually read by an engineering manager or a senior controls engineer, not HR. They are matching you to the platforms in their plant or their current order book, and they decide on four things.

  • Platforms, by name and version. "PLC programming" means nothing; "Studio 5000 v33, ControlLogix L8x, FactoryTalk View SE 13" means you can start Monday. The same for Siemens TIA Portal, Ignition, DeltaV, Experion or Beckhoff. List the ones you have really programmed, not the ones you have seen.
  • Commissioning. Have you started up a system in a live plant, under a shutdown clock, and made it run? FAT, SAT, I/O checkout, loop tuning and start-up support are the words they look for. Office-only programmers are read differently.
  • Project size and industry. I/O counts, number of lines or units, project value, and whether it was food, pharma, water, oil and gas, automotive or discrete manufacturing. Each has its own standards (ISA-88, GAMP 5 and EU GMP Annex 11, IEC 61511, robot safety, hazardous areas) and the manager wants a match.
  • Results and safety. Downtime reduced, OEE gained, cycle time cut, projects delivered on schedule, zero incidents on site. Travel availability matters at integrators; say what percentage you can do.

“When a CV says 'experienced with PLCs' and nothing else, it goes to the bottom. When it says ControlLogix, TIA Portal, Ignition, and then tells me how many I/O points they commissioned and on what schedule, that person gets a phone call the same day.”

Automation engineer personal statement and career objective examples

Write a personal statement once you have commissioned something. Use a career objective as a new graduate or when changing specialism (for example, from maintenance technician to controls engineer). In both, name platforms, an industry and one number.

Personal statement: controls engineer, discrete manufacturing
Controls engineer with 6 years in automotive tier-1 manufacturing, programming Rockwell ControlLogix and GuardLogix, Kinetix servo systems and FANUC robots on 12 assembly and welding cells. Cut cycle time 8% on a 4-station cell through motion profile changes and reduced safety-related stoppages 40% by redesigning the safety PLC logic to BS EN ISO 13849 PL d.
Personal statement: SCADA and process control (water)
SCADA engineer with 8 years at a water and sewerage company, building and supporting Ignition and AVEVA System Platform systems for 22 remote sites over 4G and radio telemetry. Migrated a 15-year-old SCADA to Ignition with 6,000 tags and zero unplanned outages, and implemented ISA/IEC 62443-based network segmentation with the IT team.
Personal statement: DCS and batch (pharma)
Automation engineer with 7 years in pharmaceutical manufacturing on Emerson DeltaV, writing ISA-88 phase logic and recipes for 3 API suites and carrying out computer system validation under GAMP 5 and EU GMP Annex 11. Delivered 9 validated changes a year with zero deviations attributed to automation.
Personal statement: PLC programmer at an integrator
PLC programmer with 4 years at a systems integrator, delivering 20+ packaging and materials handling projects on Siemens S7-1500 and Rockwell CompactLogix with WinCC Unified and FactoryTalk View ME HMIs. Comfortable with 50% travel and shutdown commissioning; last 8 start-ups finished on or ahead of schedule.
Career objective: new graduate
Electrical engineering graduate (BEng, July 2026, 2:1) with a 12-month industrial placement programming CompactLogix and FactoryTalk View ME for a packaging machine builder and a final-year project on a TwinCAT-based conveyor sorting system. Seeking a graduate controls engineer role with commissioning travel; Rockwell and Siemens training completed.
Recruiters see "automation engineer" applied to two different jobs. Industrial automation is PLCs, HMIs, robots and process control. Test automation is software QA (Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, CI pipelines). Use the title that matches the advert, and do not mix the two skill sets on one page.

Automation engineer job description bullets: weak to strong

Most automation CVs list responsibilities ("developed PLC programs and HMI screens") instead of projects. A hiring manager wants project bullets: platform, scope, your role, and the result. Rewrite each duty as a project.

WeakStrong
Developed PLC programs for production equipment.Programmed a 1,400-I/O ControlLogix system for a new snack-food line (fryer, seasoning, 6 packaging machines) in structured text and ladder, with 38 reusable AOIs; commissioned in a 12-day shutdown and hit rated speed in week 1.
Created HMI screens.Designed 120 FactoryTalk View SE displays to ISA-101 high-performance HMI principles (grey backgrounds, alarm-driven colour), cutting operator response time to critical alarms from about 4 minutes to under 1.
Supported site SCADA system.Administered an Ignition SCADA with 9,500 tags across 3 plants, including redundancy, tag history to SQL Server and 14 scheduled reports; 99.9% gateway uptime over 2 years.
Worked on safety systems.Designed and validated a GuardLogix safety system for 6 robot cells to BS EN ISO 13849 PL d, including risk assessment, safety circuit drawings and validation test reports signed off by the group safety engineer.
Commissioned equipment on site.Led SAT and start-up on 11 projects over 3 years at customer sites across the UK, averaging 3 weeks on site each, with all snag-list items closed before leaving and zero safety incidents.
Improved OEE.Raised OEE on a 2-line bakery from 61% to 72% in 9 months by adding downtime reason codes to the HMI, analysing the top 10 faults in the historian and fixing sensor and timing issues on the divider and oven infeed.

Qualifications, chartership and education for automation engineers

No licence is required to program a PLC in the UK, but a few credentials change how a CV is read. List them with the awarding body and year, and do not list vendor training as a certification unless the vendor calls it one.

The main professional credential
Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng), Engineering Council, through the IET or the Institute of Measurement and Control (InstMC), 2024
Technician-level credential (valuable for those moving up from maintenance)
Engineering Technician (EngTech), Engineering Council, through the IET or InstMC, 2022
Hazardous area competence
CompEx Ex01–Ex04 (gas and vapour atmospheres: installation, maintenance and inspection), 2025
Functional safety
TÜV Rheinland Functional Safety Engineer (IEC 61511), 2023; or Certified Machinery Safety Expert (CMSE), TÜV Nord and Pilz, 2024
Vendor training (list as training, not certification)
Rockwell Automation training: Studio 5000 Logix Designer Level 2 and FactoryTalk View SE Programming (2021); Siemens SITRAIN TIA Portal Programming 1 and 2 (2022); FANUC Handling Tool Operation and Programming (2021)
  • Chartership is not a licence to practise: no UK law requires CEng to program or sign off a control system. It is expected in consulting, water and process design roles and valued at senior level elsewhere. The route runs through a licensed institution such as the IET or InstMC, with an accredited degree or further learning, evidence of competence against UK-SPEC and a professional review interview. If you are on the way, write "working towards CEng" with a target date.
  • Education: a BEng or MEng in Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, Chemical or Control Engineering, with the classification and year. Many strong controls engineers came through an HNC or HND in electrical or instrumentation engineering, or an engineering apprenticeship, plus experience; list it and let the project bullets do the work.
  • IOSH Managing Safely, a CSCS card for construction sites, arc flash awareness and the ISA/IEC 62443 Cybersecurity Fundamentals Specialist certificate help at integrators and utilities. US readers: the equivalent professional route there is the PE licence and ISA CAP, and the document is a resume.

Entry-level automation engineer CV (graduate or technician)

Integrators and manufacturers hire new controls engineers on evidence that you have touched real hardware and will travel. A final-year project, an industrial placement, a PLC lab and a willingness to commission at 2am matter more than your degree classification.

  1. 1Header and career objective: degree, classification and graduation date, any IET or InstMC student or graduate membership, the platforms you have used and your travel availability ("open to 50% travel for commissioning").
  2. 2Projects section above experience: final-year project, placement projects and lab work. For each: platform, I/O or scope, what you built, and a measured result.
  3. 3Placements, internships and hands-on work with numbers: programs written, I/O points checked out, machines commissioned; maintenance technician, electrician's mate or robotics club work counts, because managers like people who have pulled cable and reset a fault at a machine.
  4. 4Skills: exact software (Studio 5000, TIA Portal, TwinCAT, CODESYS, Ignition Maker Edition, MATLAB/Simulink, AutoCAD Electrical) and languages (ladder, structured text, Python, C). One page, no photo, PDF.
Final-year project bullet
Designed and built a 3-lane conveyor sorting cell on Beckhoff TwinCAT 3 with a Cognex vision sensor and 2 pneumatic diverters; sorted 240 parts per minute at 99.2% accuracy in final testing, with full electrical drawings and an I/O list.
Industrial placement bullet
Wrote CompactLogix logic and FactoryTalk View ME screens for 6 case-erector machines at a packaging machine builder, checked out 380 I/O points against drawings and supported 2 customer start-ups in the Midlands and Scotland.

Format, length and keywords for an automation engineer CV

  • One page up to about 5 years; two pages after that, because project lists are long. A separate one-page project list (platform, industry, scope, your role, year) is common in this field and can be offered.
  • Order: header (with CEng, IEng or MIET after your name), personal statement, skills grouped by platform, experience with project bullets, qualifications and training, education. Graduates put projects and education higher.
  • Single column, plain fonts, no photo, no skill bars. Engineering managers dislike graphics that claim "90% PLC"; they want product names, versions and scale: I/O count, tags, lines, project value, sites.
  • State travel availability and on-call experience plainly; integrators screen on it. PDF unless the application asks for Word.

Words to mirror from adverts when they are true for you: PLC programming, HMI, SCADA, DCS, ControlLogix, Studio 5000, FactoryTalk, TIA Portal, S7-1500, Ignition, DeltaV, EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, VSD, servo, robotics, FANUC, commissioning, FAT, SAT, start-up, P&ID, I/O list, functional specification, IEC 61131-3, ISA-88, IEC 61511, ISO 13849, safety PLC, OEE, downtime, alarm management, GAMP 5, BS EN 60204-1, DSEAR, CompEx, historian, OPC UA, MES.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write an automation engineer CV?

Name your platforms by product and version in a grouped skills section, then write experience as project bullets: platform, scope (I/O count, lines, project value), your role and a measured result (downtime, OEE, schedule). Put qualifications such as CEng, IEng or MIET and vendor training in their own section. One page under five years, two pages after, plain layout, no photo.

What skills should an automation engineer put on a CV?

The PLC, HMI, SCADA and DCS platforms you have programmed (Rockwell Studio 5000, Siemens TIA Portal, Ignition, DeltaV), industrial networks (EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus, OPC UA), drives and motion, robots and vision, the standards you work to (IEC 61131-3, ISA-88, IEC 61511, ISO 13849), drawings and documentation (AutoCAD Electrical, P&IDs, FAT/SAT), and data tools (SQL, Python, historians). List only what you have used on a real system.

What is a good career objective for an automation engineer CV?

Two sentences naming your degree and graduation date, the platforms you have used on placements or projects, and the role and travel you are open to. Example: "Electrical engineering graduate (BEng, July 2026, 2:1) with a year-long placement on CompactLogix and FactoryTalk View ME and a TwinCAT final-year project; seeking a graduate controls engineer role with commissioning travel."

Is an automation engineer CV the same as a control systems engineer or PLC programmer CV?

Mostly yes. Automation engineer, controls engineer, control systems engineer and PLC programmer describe the same skill set at different levels and companies. Use the title from the advert in your header and keep your real titles in the experience section. Instrumentation and control (C&I) roles lean toward field instruments and process plants, and SCADA engineer roles toward software and networks; adjust the emphasis, not the structure.

How is a QA or test automation engineer CV different?

It is a software job. The tools are Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, Appium, JUnit or pytest, CI/CD pipelines and API testing, and the metrics are test coverage, suite run time and escaped defects. If that is your work, title the CV "Test Automation Engineer" or "QA Automation Engineer" and do not use industrial keywords; recruiters filter on them and you will be routed to the wrong jobs.

Do automation engineers need to be chartered?

Usually not. Integrators and manufacturers rarely require it, though many support you towards it. Consulting, water and process design roles value it more, and senior adverts often list CEng or IEng as preferred. If you are working towards it, say which institution and when your professional review is planned.
